Ignition wiring

Ok so first I'm completely new at this. But I have a mercury 500 that I want to wire up to the ignition switch. I'm pretty positive it was wired all wrong. But I'm determined to fix that. So my problem is how do I find what works go to the B, M, I, S, M, and C. Also I want to know can I remove the wire that runs from the tachometer to the rectifier. I want the least amount of wires so I have less possible problems later. Thanks in advance.

I did this but the switch I have isn't what is supposed to be on it. And for example it has a wire from rectifier and one to starter solenoid then wired together and ran up to switch but not sure where to attach that because the wiring diagram doesn't show that. Should I just completely rewire the whole thing? But still isn't gonna help me with the letters on the ignition switch.
