Hey all quick question, the ignition switch that i have in my boat is not correct and i cann't seem to find a part number for the correct switch, the only issue with it is that it has no choke position. my question is can i hook up a simple pushbutton switch frm the local autoparts store with a posative and neg hookup to actuate the choke? Im tired of having to manually do it when i first start it up.

Re: ignition switch

You shouldnt need to ground the switch it will short out... unless you get a cheap rinky dink switch with a light then it will require a ground. A switch and a fuse/circuit breaker is wired the same way except you can turn a switch on and off. I highly reccomend that if you do add a switch for the choke that it be a single pole switch with no ground connection. You also dont want to hard wire the switch to always have voltage applied. You should hook up a wire from the ignition switch that only supplies power to the switch when the ignition is turned on. Should be labeled ign or something you'll figure it out. I'm going to do the same thing because im tired of pushing in the key to choke while turning it to start. Hurts my damn fingers sometimes.

Re: ignition switch

I have a 87 bayliner, 85 hp that the ignition switch was fried. I couldn't find an exact replacement, but found a Sierra MP41070-2 that has the push to choke feature of my old switch. The only problem is the color code is different. I think I have it correct however, I need confirmation that I have it wired right. The new switch has red, black, black/yellow, purple, yellow/red and yellow/black. I wired it black to M, black/yellow to the other M, purple to I, yellow/red to S, yellow/black to C and of course Red to battery. Am I in the ball park?

Re: ignition switch

Oldsquid--that sounds like Mercury wiring. Took me a couple of seconds but yes, I think you have it correct. At any rate, If you do not apply power to black/yellow you won't do damage as that is the stop wire. (There is never any power on the two "M" terminals. With the switch off, the two "M" terminals are in continuity and the black/yellow goes to ground, dumping the CD capacitors to ground instead of into the coils. Thus, no spark.)
