I have a mercury 850 outboard. The origonal igniton switch was housed inside a mercontrol with a push button electric choke on top. I was having trouble locating a switch that would fit inside the mercontrol so I bought one that i could mount in the dash. Re: ignition switch wiring

What you are attempting will probably work, but my suggestion would be to keep looking for the proper switch for your MerControl. I'm sure they're available. Where are you located?

Walt

What you call pink should be orange, probably faded.

your harness (control side):
red-12v
black-ground
yellow-12v to solenoid when starting,
goes thru neutral interlock
switch in your control
white - 12V to swithchbox
orange- kill wire to switchbox
gray - 12v to choke solenoid
brown - signal to tach

I could try to explain what has to be done, but it would take forever. Your exist choke and tach are also wired in to the exist switch. I can fax you the wiring diagram for your exist motor and control, need to know yr. I cant email it, no scan.

Re: ignition switch wiring

Since the kids are asleep Ill give this a try.

Your package should show how the terminals are connected for OFF, START, RUN positions of the switch.

Your merc switch was wired D-E = OFF, A-F = RUN, A-F-B = START. OR the D,E terminals could be reversed depending on the yr.

Obviously, you will connect red to b, yellow to s, gray to c,. Now whats confusing is you need a ground (black) to be switched to the orange wire to kill the motor. Whatever is switched to the M on the package in the OFF position will be ground. Ill guess that if you connect black to i, and orange to m, thats it. Connect the white to a and your done, except for a tachometer.

Your current tach connection takes a black wire from the old switch, and a white wire from the exist choke switch. You will need to hook a black to i on the new switch, and the white to a on the new switch. the brown is the tach signal from the wiring harness, unchanged.

good luck.
