Ignition Question

Everything on my boat seems to run great and it starts up first try every time. When the boat is turned on it, it continues to make the buzzing noise like when the key is partially turned.

The noise is definitely the same noise that comes from the key being turned and is coming from the throttle, not the engine.

The only thing i can think of is it means my battery isn't charging?

Help would be apreicated.

Thanks.

Re: Ignition Question

You might post the year of the motor. it sounds like you have an alarm. Depending on the year of the motor, it could be one of several alarms.

Re: Ignition Question

The engine is the original Engine on the boat, its a 1985 Johnson 90 HP.

It sounds like the alarm is coming from the throttle, not the engine. Not sure if that would change anything.

Is there a place i can look up alarm noises by engine model?

Re: Ignition Question

The control box is where the alarm horn is at. On the cylinder head's there is a tan wire going to the head sensor's. Unplug these, and see if the alarm quits.

Re: Ignition Question

I have spoken to the marina that has serviced the boat since it was new and they told me the alarm will sound for 1 of 4 reasons.

1) high Engine Temp
2) Faulty Alarm
3) excessive vacuum on fuel line
4) low reservoir for oil

I have determined that it is not 1 and 2. I disconnected the tan wires and it still sounded the alarm. Also I am fairly confident that its not the engine temp because it happens immediately when started, the engine hasn't had enough time to heat up.

When i bought the boat, the person i got it from had two of the same Bajas with the same engine on them. One of them had an oil tank, the other one did not. So it looked like at some point it had been removed from that boat. I bought the boat with the oil tank, but was told i should still mix the gas. The boat came straight from the marina, where it was winterized, and there seems to be oil in the tank. Which, to me means that they are the ones who put the oil in there.

I was told that i need to mix gas and oil on the boat, but since there is an oil tank i am very confused. I am trying to get the service records for the boat to find out if the oil tank has been disabled or it is still functioning. There is blatantly a line going from the tank to the engine. In any event, if the alarm is sounding because of an oil problem, i am guessing that it thinks the reservoir is low, but since i mixed the oil and gas, the engine still runs fine. I have never primed the oil before starting the boat since i was mixing it. My guess is this is why the alarm is going off.

Thoughts??

Re: Ignition Question

I would fill the boat oil tank, and run 12 gal of premix thru the motor. Now refill the boat oil tank. if it takes a quart of oil, the oil injection is probably working properly. In that case I would test each alarm to make sure it works properly and consider skipping the premixing.

Re: Ignition Question

(This after you've verified the engine is getting oil)

There are two wires in the enginne area that have barrle type plugs on them. Mine are plainly labeled to "oil tank" or something to that effect. My tank has a bad sender on it and it always says the tank is empty. Un plug the wires and see if the alarm goes away. (remember to hook up the temp alarm wiring)

I have not found a replacement sender. It seems you need to buy the whole tank!
