I am having an issue with my ignition and not sure what is causing it. I can turn the motor over and run it but when I go to turn the key off, it still runs. The instrument panels all turn off but the motor still runs and I am having problems trying to narrow it down. Any suggestions and help would be great. The year is a 1989 and the HP is 125. It is a Force motor.

Re: Ignition problem- won't shut off!

Helps if you give the year and model, HP of motor.

Generally it's either bad ignition switch, or broken wire in wiring harness that connects to engine kill circuit, or no ground connection jumper for kill circuit on terminal block on motor. Or could be wires for kill circuit on motor not hooked up or broken.

To stop the motor when you turn the key off on the ignition systems that don't use a distributor, the signal to fire the CD packs is grounded. You probably have an open ground somewhere.

Ground the white wires on the back of the ignition switch with the engine running. If the engine shuts off, buy a new ignition switch. If it doesn't, you can have a bad ground to the ignition switch or bad wires between the switch and the terminal board on the engine.

Checked all wires again and found one that I missed earlier. It was the ground underneath the ignition coils. Thanks to all for the help.
