I'm looking for opinions on ignition stuff for my 89 Mercruiser 5.7 Litre, 260 HP, Type MCM. It has the Thunderbolt Ignition and it does pretty well considering. Considering the rotor tip is burned, the rotor connection points on the cap are corroded, and here is the biggie, the coil is cracking around the horn where the cable connects it to the distributor cap. I have not pulled any spark plugs yet but I plan to change them just because I don't know their history. The wires are OE and look nearly new.

I really didn't expect to find trouble, this boat was new to me this summer and I ran it about 200 hours since I put it in service this June. It always starts right up and when I crack the throttle it just about leaps unless it's carrying a full load. Fully loaded it will still plane out darn well quick compared to some of the toys I grew up using.

I'll also be getting a fuel pump this off-season since mine is on the reserve diaphragm.

So here is the question, replace with OE, copycats, or upgrades?

I'd love some opinions from folks who have liked or disliked various components or combinations. I don't plan to do any thing with the carb, the way it runs is great as far as I am concerned.

My boat is and has always been, used in fresh water. See my signature.

I noticed a little better top end with 89 Octane Valvetect fuel by the way.

ps. Channel Marine in the Weirs Channel, Laconia, NH has a great parts guy. He found the right circuit breaker to match the ones in my 20 year old dash board, oops, am I supposed to say binnacle?

Re: ignition parts

why not just put a cap and rotor on it and then just get a new coil, wires and plugs, should pick up some then.

Ayuh,... You can probably buy the parts Right here at iboats, or at Napa, or a Dealer,...
I'd ohm the wires, regardless What they Look like,...
Sparkplugs are AC Delco MR43T...

Next to nothing.... couple of ohms, 10, 20, that's all fine. They are not resistor wires. You don't want to see an open or hundreds or thousands of ohms.
As far as PM goes. Cap, rotor, plugs once a season. I wouldn't be surprised if your coil is cracked because you have either bad wires, bad plugs, or both.

I think Jason has the scoop on the coil problem. Cracking at the tower as you described can happen with improperly (too much) gapped spark plugs or older spark plug wires. As spark plug wires age the conductor begins to break apart and add a lot of gap that you cannot see.

To check high tension spark plug wires you use a "megger" meghm tester. It puts higher voltage thru and is the only real test for high tension wires like spark plug wires.

If you mean fuel is in the sight tube going to the carb, it is time to replace it now.
