Mid 80,s Wellcraft nova 23 xl 5.7 mercruiser, problem hard to get out of gear,I have checked the adjustment of the cutout switch its okay and the fork for the lack of a better word that engages the switch moves freely,as per the manual everything physically looks good,on the electrical side the grounds are good and proven with a multi meter the wires at the distributor are hooked up and in good shape and tested the green/wht cut out wire which is open and closes to ground by manually tripping switch yet the ignition will not shut down with switch tripped,my question is would it be possible to be a ignition amplifier or the pickup in the distributor, every thing is stock O.E.M mercruiser and all wiring is like new, running out of ideas.

Re: Ignition cutout switch

The green/white wire from the switch shouild go back to the green/white wire attached to the dist. If the meter shows a ground when manually operating the switch then the ing, will stall the motor when operated by hand. There is an adjustment for the arm with the rollerattached to the switch.

Did you check to see if the shift interrupt switch itself works? It's nothing more than an on/off switch.

Thanks for the reply,s fellas, yes the grn /white wire is attached at the dist along with the grn/wht from the ignition amplifier I was running a static test and was able to send the grn/wht to ground,by tripping the switch,Iam now going to double check by hooking her up to city water and fire in the hole and trip the switch manually and see, possibly the switch has to move to far in order to work,I will report out later after a live run test. Thanks again

Re: Ignition cutout switch

Well I double checked the adjustment as per the Seloc manual and the cutout switch is adjusted to what it calls for,in a live fire test with the engine running and shift lever in neutral on land on the muffs if I trip the switch it does indeed shut down, which is puzzling,on the water it has a issue with hard to get out of gear, and the outdrive is new,the old one was doing the same thing but since it was on its way out I thought nothing of it,so I can only assume that I have a shift cable issue, the search continues.SWW
