Hello guys,

I was out on the water yesterday and my boat just shut off, out of the blue. The motor is a 2005 Volvo Penta 4.3GL. It will turn over, but will not start. I have fuel, the pump is working. A fellow boater, pulled a plug wire from the distributor and pulled the boot back, and held it near the distributor and determined that there was no spark, and diagnosed the problem as the ignition coil. Does this sound like it could be the root of the problem? I want to diagnose it, but am not sure of any way to check to make sure it is the coil. The boat recently had a 200 hour tune up and everything is good. I take good care of the boat.

If it is indeed the coil, i was looking at replacement coils. My question is, does it have to be the volvo penta 3883158 that the parts manual calls for, or is there other brands/makes that will work? I have looked up some others and they seem to be the same. Can you guys please help me. I dont really want to pay $70+ dollars for a volvo penta one, if i can get an AC Delco or something equivalent for cheaper, as i feel like i am paying for the name.

I have found some other model numbers which are the same design.

I really doubt its the ignition coil and the troubleshooting done so far is incomplete.

You first need to see if you have power to the coil. Could be a number of reasons why it wouldn't be there including you "man overboard" switch is open/disconnected. I would check that first.

I'm with Bruce, those coils seldom fail, and there are a lot of other things that could be wrong.

Here is some troubleshooting information for the EST ignition system.

Thanks for the info, i will attempt these tests, however i do want to tell you that last night i attempted to pull the coil off, and i took the 2 bolts out that hold it to the motor, and upon further inspection, the metal in the middle of the coil, is rusted and has swollen up soo much, that its smashing the plastic plugs, and they cannot be removed. I dont know if this is of any concern, but to me it is, that the coil has has gotten wet enough to rust and swell up. I believe this is due to the coil being right below the lip for the sun deck, so when it rains, etc and water drips down, it hits the coil.

Let me know if you think, after hearing this, that the coil could be the problem? I am going to still does these tests, but i will have to cut some of the plastic off the plug to get it off the coil.

Probably should have said that to begin with. We can't see your coil, only read what you say.

Will your automotive coils work? I don't know. They have to be mounted to the engine to ground them.

Thanks Don, I would have mentioned it to begin with, but like i said in my response, i just took it off last night, after my original post, and found that it was this way. The ones i linked to in the original post, seem to mount the exact same way. I may just go with the napa one since they list it as a replacement part for the motor.

Have you verified that you have power to the coil yet?

I have not yet. i am going to cut the plastic at the bottom of the plug so that i can get it out, and then i will check to see if i have voltage to the coil. If i do, then i will check the coil, with the ohm meter per the manual that was posted above, and see if everything checks out.

i will keep you guys posted.

Unless you have something strange, you don't have to cut anything. Pull the plug going into the coil and see if you have voltage on the purple wire.

You obviously didn't do any of the tests in the file I posted for you .. First test is how to check for voltage. You didn't do it.

Re: ignition coil 3883158 cross reference

Ok. So after getting plugs to come free, I installed it back on the boat, and did the tests that Don mentioned, although he thinks I didn't :D. I have 12 volts on the purple wire, I have 12 volts on the pink wire at the distributor. So that all checks out. The test of the coil itself with the ohm meter, however turned up that the coil is bad. Here is a picture of how the coil looks, you can see where the gray and black plugs were smashed between the coil itself and the metal middle that expanded, therefore requiring me to cut the plastic to get the plug off. This is pitiful looking, and I cannot believe it looks like this, as the rest of the motor is spotless.

Yea, i agree it looks terrible. I believe it looks like this because it sits below the joint where the sun deck pivots when lifting it up, and as a result when water leaks down, it can drip on the coil. I am going to devise a gutter system of some sort to prevent this in the future and channel it to one side. :)

Re: ignition coil 3883158 cross reference

So here is the update on the coil. I talked to a rep at the local Autozone and he identified the coil off the boat, as the same coil on this 4.3L TBI S10 pickup truck. So i took the chance and purchased the coil for $21 bucks, just to see. I went home and followed the instructions in the manual that Don provided up top, and drilled the rivets out of the original coil and removed the brackets. I used the nuts and bolts that came with the new coil and bolted the bracket to the coil. I then installed it on the boat, and first bump of the ignition the engine started!!!! YAY!!!

so for $21.99 i got the coil and within 15 minutes i was running again. Volvo Penta, NAPA, OMC, etc want $79.99 plus for the same coil, but with the brackets already installed. I refuse to be taken like this. I hope everyone can benefit from this thread, if they need to replace their coil! dont pay the big money for the big name, when you can go to the local auto parts place and get a replacement! I will keep a spare on the boat!
