I have a 1975 25hp 2cyl electric start, electric choke Johnson. The External wiring harness is homehome made by the previous owner. The old interior harness was the 6 pin rectangle. The orginal wire colors are either faded to grey, painted over or just gone.

Battery + 8ga
Battery - 8ga
Solenoid
Choke
Coil 1
Coil 2

The exterior harness has rotted away, and I replaced the wires.

The exsisting starter switch has three terminals.

Batt, Sol, Ign.

The only battery connections are the large 8ga battery cables to the motor.

There is a separate 2 wire choke switch, and a 2 wire safety/lanyard switch, that will be replaced also, as those wires are crumbly and faded too, but they work for now.
Prior to replacing the wires, the above configuration would start the motor, operate the choke, but would not shut the motor off when the key was turned off.

Now for the question.

Can someone explain how to correctly wire the ignition switch as described above?? Do I even have the proper ignition/choke switch combination?. In not, please recommend the proper configuration. As far as I know the Motor and switches are original to the boat.

Bombero474
P.S.

I have read some threads about "Bad Power Packs" causing the motor to not shut down with the key off. I will investigate this, since the boat was a handme down, and has always operated that way. Also after further digging under the console, I found the safety/kill switch disconnected. So that may cause problems with the rewire.

Check this Serria web page, go to the page on switches, click on (Ignition Switches). You will have to download a small file, It has a complete wiring diagram for most switches.I used it about a week ago when I wired in a new switch.
I think it will help you out.
http://www.sierramarine.com/
If that one doesn't have the info you need this web page it has the wiring colors for most outboards. You will need to download the troubleshooting PDF file at the bottom of the page.
After you have downloaded the 64 page PDF file look at page #6, hope this helps.

http://www.rapair.com/Default.aspx?tabid=90

Re: Ignition/Choke Switch Wiring. '75 25hp

Probably the easiest thing to do is to get an all in one ignition switch rather than three separate switches.
The important thing is to understand that the igntion (spark) system has absolutely nothing to do with the 12v system, and connecting the two usually leads to a broken igntion system. Get the correct ignition switch for an outboard. It will have connections to the battery (fuse it at 20 amps for most switches), acessories (things that get +12v when the boat is 'on', starter solenoid, choke, and two terminals labeled 'M' for the two coils.
When the switch is in the 'off' position, the two 'M' terminals are connected together killing spark. When it's in the 'run' position, the two 'M' terminals are separated and +12 from the batt terminal is sent to the 'A'cessories terminal. When the key is in the 'Start' position, +12v is sent to the 'S'olenoid terminal. When the key is pushed in, +12v is sent to the 'C'hoke terminal to choke the engine.

Hope that explains it!

Life is good, New (Proper) switch, Added the batt wire to the switch, the local library had the manual, and with the help provided, got the motor up and running and it also shuts off properly when the key is off. Thanks again.

Bombero474
