Ignition barrel suddenly very stiff

Hi all,

Just put my boat back in the water post annual service and she is running wonderfully well, apart from the fact that my ignition barrel has suddenly become really stiff? I gave it a squirt of WD40, but it is still not right.

Anyone else had this problem? I am about to remove it from the dashboard and take a closer look at it, but wondered if there was an easier fix

Mike, maybe it's time to replace it. If it locks up out on the water, it could be a little problem getting it started again. The little cost would be a huge piece of mind. JMHO!

Ayuh,.... Ignition switches get wet,.... I'd try an actual Lube over the WD40 1st,...

If that don't loosen it up, replace it,...

Sure, they're pretty generic. You can always swap it out with your dock neighbor's boat, not that I'd suggest that

Thanks everyone, I got it working much better with some lube and will keep an eye on it. I am thinking if it gets bad again, I will pull it out and take it apart if possible. It is effectively a metal switch, so good lubrication should do the trick....

Mine was plastic. When it failed it failed completely. Thank goodness it was in the garage!

Just replace it, they're so inexpensive as to not be worth the time to overhaul them unless you just want garage time

I replaced mine with a push button switch (with a toggle kill switch - semi secure going to add another one for double secret security). Sealed off from the elements. Something about a push button starter that I just love.

I have easy access to the backside of my panel so when mine died on the water it was an easy pull out and jump wires to get her started.
