Consider which size motor you are thinking about. Some models have features that are more "friendly", needed, or desired than other models, IE.. the 115 and 125 hp Mercs are good price sensitive engines, good "bang for the buck" engines. But, probably not the best idling motors around. Having said that most people don't know that they idle on only two cylinders and then pick up the other two after given some throttle, and many prople may not care! Are you thinking about an Opti-max??? Four stroke?? Also consider after the sale service! Who's gunna help you if you get into a jam??? Mercurys are fine engines, some may not like them but there's people who think fords and Chevys suk, they drive Dodge! Go fish!!
