Changes
Phil Ochs
(guitar intro)
Sit by my side, come as close as the air
share in a memory of grace and wonder in my words
dream about the pictures that I play of changes

Green leaves of summer turn red in the fall
To brown and to yellow they fade and then they have to die
trapped within the circle time parade of changes

Scenes of my young years were warm in my mind
visions of shadows that shine til one day I returned
and found they were the victims of the vine of changes

The world spinning madly it drifts in the dark
swings through a hollow of haze a race around the stars
a journey throuh the universal blaze with changes

(Guitar bridge)

Moments of magic will glow in the night
all fears of the forest are gone but when the morning breaks
they're swept away by golden drops of dawn of changes

Fashions will part to a strange melody
as fires will sometimes burn cold like petals in the wind
we're puppets to the silver strings of soul of changes

Your tears will be trembling now were somewhere else
one last cup of wine we will pour and I'll kiss you one more time
and leave on the rolling river shore of changes

So sit by my side come as close as the air
share in a memory of grace and wonder in my world
dream about the pictures that I play of changes

While trouring in South Africa to protest Apartheid, Phil was brutally attacked and his vocal cords were damaged and this ended his career and eventually drove him to suicide.

Bracero
Phil Ochs

Wade into the river
through the rippling shallow waters
steal across the the thirsty border Bracero

Come bring your hungry body
to the golden fields of plenty
from a pesos to a penny Bracero

Welcome to California
where the friendly farmer will take care of you

Come labor for your mother
for your father and your brother
For your sisters and your lover, Bracero

Come pick the fruits of yellow
Break the flowers from the berries
Purple grapes will fill your bellies Bracero

Welcome to California
where the friendly farmer will take care of you

And the sun will bite your body
As the dust will dry you thirsty
While you muscles beg for mercy Bracero

In the shade of your sombrero
drop your sweat upon the soil
Like the fruit your youth can spoil Bracero

Welcome to California where the friendly farmer will take care of you

When the weary night embraces
Sleeping shacks that could be cages
They will take it from your wages Bracero

Come sing about tomorrow
with a jingle of the dollar
and forget your crooked collar Bracero

Welcome to California
where the friendly farmer will take care of you

And the local men are lazy
and the make to much of trouble
'sides we'd have to pay them double Bracero

Ah but if you feel your falling
If you find the pace is killing
There are others who are willing Bracero

Welcome to California
where the friendly farmer will take care of you

The more things change the more they stay the same. So much for the guestworker program.

All I read was the last line. Can you give me an executive summary? Manage up, what do you want me to take away from this?

Take from it what you will. You get out of it what you put into it. If you only read the last line, I would say you cheated yourself. But then that speaks pretty loudly as it is a human condition that promotes inequity. Everybody educated is just like everybody ignorant. Thank you for red xing the avatar, even if just for a moment.
PS: I have edited out some transfer errors. Also, the message is more readily assimilated when the meter is accompanied by the melody.

Lyric and music by Phil Ochs (1940 - 1976)
the thoughts with which, I concur.
As promised I am making another post, dedicated to Codsworth.

I am Going to Say it Now
Phil Ochs (Words and Music)

Oh I am just a student sir
and I only want to learn
But it is hard to read
through the rising smoke
from the books that you like to burn
So I'd like to make a promise
and I'd like to make a vow
that when I have something to say sir
I going to say it now.

You've given me a number and
you've taken off my name
to get around this campus
'Y you almost need a plane
and I'm supporting *********
while your supporting ***
So when I have something to say
I am going to say it now

I wish that you'd make up your mind
I wish that you'd decide
That I should live as freely
as those who live out side
'cause we also are entitled
to the right to be endowed
and when I have something say
I am going to say it now

ooh you'd like to be my father
you'd like to be my dad and
give me kisses when I good
and spank me when I'm bad
but since I left my parents
I've forgotten how to bow and
when I have something to say
I am going to say it now

And things they might be
different if I was here alone
but I have a friend or two
who no longer live at home
And we'll respect our elders
just as long as they allow
that when I have something to say
I am going to say it now

I read of other countries
where the students take a stand
They've even helped to overthrow
the leaders of the land
now I wouldn't go so far to say
we are also learning how but
when I have something to say
I am going to say it now

So keep right onna talkin'
and tell us what to do
but if nobody listens
my apoologies to you
and I know that you were
younger once cause you sure are older now
and when I have something to say
I am going to say it now

Love Me, I am a Liberal
Phil Ochs (Lyric and Music)

(spoken narrative)
In every American Community there are varing shades of political opinion. One of the shadiest of these is the Libber ul. (applause) an outspoken group on many subject. The degrees to the left of center in good times, ten degrees to right of center if it affects the personally. (applause) So here then is a lesson in safe logic.
(guitar intro)
I cried when they shot Medgar Evers,
chills ran down my spine and I cried
when they shot Mr Kennedy as though
I'd lost a father of mine
But Malcome X got what was coming
he got what he asked for this time
So love me love me love me I'm a libber ul (aside: Get it?)

I go to civil right rallies
I put down the old DAR
I love Harry and Syndey and Sammy
I hope every colored boy becomes a star
but don't talk about revolution
that's going a little bit to far
so love me love me love me
I'm a libber ul
I cheered when Humphry was chosen
my faith in the system restored
and I am glad the the commies
were thrown out of the AFL-CIO Board
and I love Peurto Ricans and Negroes
As long as they don't move next door
So love me love me love me I'm a Libber ul
Aw, the people of old Mississippi
Should all hang the heads in shame
now I can't understand how their minds work
what's the matter don't they watch TV(edit)
but if you aske me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
love me love me love me, I'm a libber ul
yes I read (very dated) and (also out of print)
I've learned to take every view
I've memorized Lerner and Golden
I feel like I am almost a Jew
but when it comes to time like (fill in the police action, war, storm defense of Democracy of your choice) there is no one more red white and blue
so love me love me love me I'm a libber ul
I vote for the (insert party of choice)
they want the US to be strong (paraphrased)
I attend all the Pete Seeger Concerts (now I suppose I will have to do a treatise on Pete Seeger ;p)
he sure gets me singing those songs
and I'll send all the money you ask for
but don't ask me to come on along
love me love me love me I'm a Libber ul
Sure once I was young and ipulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
I went civil rights rallies
learned all the old Union Hymns
Aw but I've grown older and wiser
and that's why I'm turning you in
love me love me love me, I'm a Libber ul
