idle timing after carb rebuild

J60TLETD. Success for me, I rebuilt the carbs using my manual. It was not hard at all and I'm really glad I got my hands dirty rather than taking it somewhere to have it done. This board gave me lots of confidence to tackle this myself. I'm feeling good.

Now, after the rebuild, I ran a can of sea foam through it as well. I reset the slow speed mixture screws as stated in the manual "lightly set them and then backed all three out 2 and 1/2 turns".

She was smoking a lot while on the lake and so I was trying to remember the post on here by Joe Reeves or possibly Dhadley about how to get these boogers set. Could someone provide the link. Something about turning the top screw in incremements until motor boggs, then backing out 1/4 turn. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, before I set the slow speed mixture screws, should I set the idle timing so that it consistently is around 750 rpm while in gear? I need a timing light for that, correct? I read about it in my manual. I was getting confused out on the lake between the idle timing and slow speed mixture screws.

Bottom line is my motor is smoking a lot after the carb rebuild and sea foam. I think I'm close, but was a little fuzzy on how the manual was talking about setting the top slow speed mixture screw at the highest idle speed possible, etc. etc.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

The Joe Reeves procedure is in the FAQ section.

Follow the manual on link and sync first.

question about J.Reeves instructions

question about J.Reeves instructions

i have instructions for carb adjustment submitted by J.Reeves, on the FAQ forum, but I'm confused about what it's saying.

"Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running."

Not sure how this is done. Do I manually pull a throttle arm on the engine itself to lower the rpms outside of the normal idle rpms? Usually, when I start the motor, it starts out idling fast then drops down to somewhere around 800 or 900 rpm (that's not in gear, just in idle).

Later the instructions state "As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase." I understand this part. Then "Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running". I don't understand how to lower the rpms again, please help.

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate it.

Re: idle timing after carb rebuild

To set the needle(s), of course you need to keep the engine running in gear. If it's stalling out, use the idle screw to keep the rpms up so the engine stays running while in gear. As the needle is turned in (lean), the engine rpms should pick up. When this happens, adjust the idle screw out to keep the rpms from going to high.
