idle problem

my 50hp 1971 evinrude is on the lowest idle and it stalls regularly while trolling at idle speed or downrigging can someone please tell me how to turn up the idle?

A '71 would have idle screws on the front of the carbs so you should be able to turn up the idle with those.

ALWAYS count turns and write down what you did in case it doesn't work, you want to turn both carbs the exact same amount and go in 1/8 turns, it shouldn't take much.

I would first change your plugs and gap them correctly if you haven't and maybe do a decarb, changing adjustments on a carb is always the last thing you do.

Check the Top Secret file at the begining of this forum for carb adjustments. There is also a screw on the arm on the stbd side of the mtr which attaches to the timer base which is the idle speed screw.

Now that said, what kind of compression do you have? Also have you done a good decarb on this mtr lately?

thanks guys i turned the mixture screws on the front of the carbies the top cylinder reacted a lot quicker than the bottom cylinder before the adjustments the motor would jump around crazy after the adjustments the motor purrrrrrrrrrrrrrs like a kitten i was running rich on both cylinders they both required 1/4th a turn and the RPM raised now idles wonderful
