hey guys, my 69 25 hp sportster shows 2 different part #'s for the idle adjustment screw. one is [h=1]0304573, which show in a pic is 2 inches long, the other # 0437966, is 3 inches long. i just picked one up off fleabay with spring but it's the shorter one and doesn't snug up enough to hit the stop before the spring is fully compressed. what is the difference in the 2 and why would both be shown in schematics for my motor?[/h]

I can't say that I've ever seen the long one. Have no idea where that came from. If the one you have is too short, I suggest you examine the other linkage for looseness or slop. One sneaky thing I've found more than a few times is the vertical throttle shaft is twisted. It can happen from forcing the throttle when in neutral.

OR, more common, the key at the bottom is sheared off or excessive wear on it or the slot it goes into.

If all else fails, just go get a stainless steel screw the length that you want.

The working part / length is the same on both.----Look for issues on the motor for the reason that you have to turn it all the way in.

By key do you mean something to do with the throttle control gear?

At the bottom of the vertical shaft is a plastic pin.-----Round with flat ends that fit in the sector gear at the bottom.----Check it.----Just put a NOS brass version in a 1963 model 10 hp.
