I got this motor with a couple of others I bought. Seems to be in pretty good shape- Good compression, and looks mostly intact other than a missing tiller handle and a missing starter. Last owner said that the starter went out, so he took it off and just used the manual start...

I know it's a 25 HP, based on the cowl, but don't know the specific model or year. There is NO ID plate that I can find- I've looked in all the obvious places. Am I just overlooking it? If it's gone, is there any other way to positively ID the motor? I'm guessing it's a mid-70's.

I've attached a couple of pics if it helps....

The 25Hp came 1973 and it hade that design on the cowl until 1977. The id tag should be just under/infront of the carb.

Thanks. The ID tag must be missing- Under the carb is where I looked first, it's not there :(

But, it doesn't appear that there were a lot of changes between those years, so getting parts shouldn't be a huge problem...

I found the ID plate!

It's rivited under the fuel pump, and was covered up with dirt...

It is actually a 305HA, Which makes it a 30 HP 1975 model. So much for using the 25 HP cowl to help ID it :)

Yeh I bought a 20 hp Johnson 10 years ago and done a search and it came back as a 18 hp 1967 model but just 2 hp differents I could live with. my brother bought a 35 hp Johnson with no cowl. well I run the mod number it was a 15 hp lol I told him that was the smallest 35 hp I have ever seen he had no knowledge of outboards at the time but it run great!!!
