Can anyone help me to identify the year of this outboard? I just bought this boat and it needs some work on the power head. There is no ID tag to be found in the normal places. I am kinda new to boating and any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may try poping the cowl off and look to see if there is an ID disk on the motor. They usually look like a freeze plug... Then you can take that number and research it for additional info and year...

A three-cylinder 60hp was made in 1970-71, but I don't think you have one of those. The 3-cyl 60hp next appeared in 1986 and was produced for several years. Just where in those years yours falls, I can't say.

Cowling and decals look exactly like my 1989 60hp.
Look at the connector between power pack and stator. If 3-pole (2x brown, 1x black/yellow), it's 1986...1988. If 5-pole (add 2x orange), it's 1989 or up.

Without a model number its difficult to say exactly as they looked very similar cosmetically during these years (86-90)......the design of the cylinder head/thermostat cover will narrow down the approximate year of manufacture as they changed this quite a bit during this period......post up some pics with the cowling removed.

Re: Identifying the year of my 60HP Johnson outboard

on the second picture above there is a little round silver disc by the lifting eye
this will have numbers and letters stamped in it.
this will let us all see what the motor is and we can then tell you the exact year of your motor.

its definitly a 49ci motor .

It looks to be a 1987 model that has been in salt water, it has a CDI replacement trigger, t-stat leaking and someone indexed flywheel at sometime due to a running issue. It is a 49 CI motor as previously stated, what type of work does it need and is it locked up???

Re: Identifying the year of my 60HP Johnson outboard

In response to the question what does it need.. It needs one piston replaced. the edge of the top of one piston is what looks to me to be slightly melted. possibly from being overheated. I plan on honing the liner and replacing the one piston and rings and also putting in a water pump and thermostat. The other 2 cylinders had a compression test of 140. If my plan works then great I will have a decent little tool around boat that did not cost me much money. If my plan fails I will probably just start looking for the type of boat that I really want. But I paid next to nothing for the boat so I am not hurting on it.
