Hello all:

I just bought a used sailboat which came with a small Nissan outboard. The previous owner bought that used and didn't know the year it was made.

I need some more identification on this outboard for my insurance company records. Perhaps someone can help me identify the actual model number and year of manufacture (Nissan website not that helpful.)

It's s 5 hp Nissan late-model, 2-stroke. Grey case, just says "Nissan 5" on the outside, no graphics. Inside there is a small (about 1") round metal fitting between the inside gas tank and the other half of the engine, which bears some stamped numbers: 85254.

Can someone possibly give me some idea of the year of manufacture and model name? Or perhaps refer me to a website resource? Maybe it's just "Nissan 5."

Thanks in advance,
Carlos Alden

The serial number plate should be on the outside, port lower engine cover. That serial number on the plate is the only way to tell the year.

As Elvin said, the s/n should be on a plate or decal on the port side of the motor. If it's not, then the s/n is stamped on the engine. From your description it sounds as if the 5 digit # you found on the small round metal should be it. To find out the model year, just go to Nissan's website and use their "contact us" form to send your inquiry to them. They should be able to find the model year and email you back.

Thanks to both posters for the information. The stamped number is the ONLY kind of information I can find on this thing. I expected to see something on the inside of the top housing, but didn't.

I'll contact Nissan with that stamped number.

Carlos

Wow - customer service or what? I just emailed Nissan with that single number I had on the engine, and within 20 minutes they responded with all relevant information. That says a lot to me about their attitude towards customers. I'm the third owner of a 10-year old used outboard - I thought I'd have to pester them.

Is Nissan service always this good?

Carlos

I strongly recommend that you go to www.internetoutboards.com and buy a service manual for your engine, now that you know what it is. You will be able to do most things yourself, but having the service manual will make things a lot easier/cheaper if you have to have a mechanic do things for you.

Elvin- you spend a great deal of time helping people here- sometimes when it is obvious they are being a pain in the a$$. The resources you have at your disposal combined with your knowledge base is pretty unparalelled. On these boards you represent Tohatsu/ Nissan- and it reflects very positive upon the brand.

You deserve the compliments...keep up the good work.

Hello All,
I recently hired on at a Nissan/Tohatsu dealer and have seen the Manufacturor back up older motors bought by second parties like they were family....Calling the service dept. at the headquarters also brings exc.help by real live people.A great product that has its only drawback in that certain buyers are stuck on higher $ brands for various reasons.
On a cost per hp basis , there is no better product.
Having worked for builders and retailers while still being a consumer, Ive learned that each one is motivated by certain things. It is rare to see a Co. loyal to its customers/owners and they will continue to operate for another 50+ years!
Tim
