I've got a 1986 Bayliner, just bought yesterday.

Has water in the oil, and I'm sure I can identify and fix that with no difficulty.

HOWEVER I cannot seem to identify the engine.

It says it's a Volvo on the valve cover, but I've been told it co uld be a Chevy engine (Half of a 327?).....

I also received part #'s of what a boat shop believes it to be, a 151 or a 171?

I know it needs a new exhaust manifold and/or head gasket......hard to buy parts on an engine I can't identify :)

also - only has one carb (Someone asked).

Thanks,

Scott

Welcome to iboats. :) You need to post the serial number of your transom assembly. You should find it on the engine somewhere. I can't help you personally, but there are others that can.....JK

Transom? Isn't that the bellhousing/drive section?

Sorry to sound ignorant, I'll pull the cover again, someone said I should have an identifying decal under it......I Just pulled it aside last night without looking at it.....

Thanks, will do that tonight when I get home.

PS - I'm over in Bremerton :)

Well, howdy neighbor! I might not be using the correct terminology, but I'm pretty sure the engine/drive package is a/k/a transom assembly. Anyway, it should be located somewhere on the engine ;) ......JK

It's probably just me not using the correct terminology :D

Sounds good, will check it tonight, going to do a radiator pressure test, check cyclinder compression etc, if all that's good then the water test on the exhaust manifold.....ye ha :)

If its overhead cam my best guess would be a Volvo B230F. Does it say AQ125b or AQ131a anywhere?

An Inboard out drive assembly consists of 3 basic piaces, the engine, the transom assembly, and the outdrive or lower unit. so the transom assembly would be what is left on the boat if you pulled the lower unit and the engine. Usually this is the gimball housing, pivot housing, bellows assemblies, transome mount all on the outside of the boat, y pipe, some of the steering assembly, rear motor mounts etc all inside of the boat.

OK The transom serial # is 712869.

As I am in the boat facing the engine, it has a left tilt about 15 degrees, exhaust on left, intake on right.

It is an overhead cam, says "Volvo" on the intake manifold.....

I had another 800,000 series number for the part number on the transom but I forgot it while enroute back from the parking area.

Also - the Owner previous to me said AQH 135/140 for a part number/model # of engine, ring a bell?

It is in fact a 135 hp engine.....confirmed.
Thanks!

If you call Bayliner toll free at 877-861-6494
with your Hull ID number off the transom, they can tell you what engine was shipped in the boat when new.
They used a lot of AQ125's,
Here is a link to an older 125 with a 270 drive, your engine probably looks very similar, but may have 2 carbs or ????????

http://www.volvo.com/NR/rdonlyres/041A830E-AA9C-449B-A36C-9D8B21F424EF/0/AQ125B_270D_198X_en.pdf

Look on the port side of the engine under the manifold, there should be a brass tag with the numbers for the engine embossed on it.
If it's gone, Bayliner is your best hope
