Hello, I am new to to this board in terms of posting.but am amazed at the wealth of knowledge here. I started a project boat.1981 Grady White 19' runabout. It had a motor with water in the oil,and left out with water in the block. I got another motor but I don't know the year. Is there a way to reference the year by the serial #? It is a 120 mercruiser. I would like to buy a service manual and need to get the right one. Thanks in advance.

I'm Sure that Don could give you the year by the Serial #,.........
He might even have links to the Service Manuals that you Need............

But,.....
For the Few Differences,......
I'd Assume that 1981 IS the Year of the Model of Driveline that's In your boat................

The Differences that occured about that Time was the change from the Model 1 or Pre-Alphas to the Alpha 1s...........

As far as Swapping Motors of Different Vintages,.......
There's Usually Very Few, if Any Issues for Those motors............
And,.... Most All of those Issues are with the Things that are bolted To the motors.........

Thanks for the offer to help.
The serial # for the motor is 6808731
The motor that may have a cracked block is 5566192. I would like to tear down both motors and try to rebuild a good one. Will the heads be interchangeable?

While the Head May, or May Not be Exactly the Same,.........
They Will Interchange without Issues...........

There has been a few changes in them,.......
Different sized Ports,.... Different sized Sparkplugs,.... Etc.......

But,.....
Like I said,....... They Will interchange............

If by chance Don finds this thread,......

I'm Sure that he can ID the Year,+ Which Manual you Need.............

I'm Barely online after a Hard Drive Crash,+ No Longer have my old list of saved Favorites........
Kinda Flying while Blind,............. Ya know.......

Wish I could do More for you,...... But I Can't........

Re: Identifying Mercruiser Year by Serial #

Well, I ran into this thread again at lunch time, but ran out of time.
Turns out the 6808731 engine is an 84 Merc 120. The manual you need for it is book #3, Merc part number 90-95693.
Can't tell you much about the original motor, the info I have doesn't go back much before 84.
Your best bet for part numbers it to go to the Mercruiser parts express, here is the link.

http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/PartsExpress/HomePage/homepage.asp

You will have to type in a zip code and pick a dealer so you can view the parts list, but if you don't order, it doesn't make any difference. It still gives you the most up to date info.
