I was just given a johnson seahorse that is very similar to the one in the picture. The owner wasnt sure what horsepower it was and I cant find any tag on it to identify the model or serial number. Where would the tag be located on this motor? I am sure I am simply just overlooking it. Thanks

Also my motor doesnt have the whole recoil assembly. It is just a pull cord that you have to manually rewind. Does anyone know where I could find one of these. I will post the numbers as soon as I find out where to look if this will help my parts search. Thanks again

Looks a lot like a TD-20 I have, the numbers are stamped on the power head just in front of the tiller on mine. 5HP, Mine I think is from late 40's.

It looks like it could be an HD-20 or HD-25, which is a 2.5hp as well as the TD.

Your best bet on the recoil start is to place a free ad on aomci.org's website.

Looks like an HD-25...again look for a number stamped in to castings. I've got an HD and it looks like it...or its older brother the TD

Re: Identifying an older johnson.....help?

It looks like a hd25 to me. I have one, but not in as nice a condition. They work great and run well. The only problem I have is on mine, the carb leaks gas like crazy.

These are pretty common motors and if attend a local aomci chapter meet you'll probably see several of them for sale. At the AOMCI website, of which I am a long time member, will have a link to local chapters as well as a bunch of links to places that may have parts for your motor.

Here's a place that has parts for your motor, assuming it is an hd25.

Also the wiggle impeller is being remade by a few places, and the grip may also be available from fox grips.

According to my little book of outboards a hd 20 is a 2.5 hp from 1941-45

Looks like this:

The 2.5, 3 a 5 look very similar.

I'll vote for your motor being an HD. They're hard to tell apart from a TD 5 horse unless they are next to each other, then it's obvious.

The recoil housings aren't interchangeable, in fact most parts aren't. But either motor along with needed parts are not hard to obtain.

Fun motors! I have 3 TD's:

And 1 HD project. And 5 green tank Mercs and........... :D

Good luck and have fun with your motor! :)

Thanks for the input aganser but I actually looked at the casting numbers and it says TD-20. You say that parts arent hard to come by so what are some good places to check? Better yet you can just let me buy one off of the the ones in that video:-D

Thanks for the help guys!

e-bay or an outboard motor club swap meet is your best place to get parts.

I see you tried the AOMCI Ask A Member website. You should be getting an answer soon. I put an ad on there a few year ago looking for a TD parts motor. Got calls and emails like you wouldn't believe. Got 2 more running TD20's for free. :D

Your picture threw me off. That looked like an HD. But put both together and it's obvious. :)
