I'm not sure if i'm in the right forumn for this question or not. I just got a boat & it was sold without a title. I have a dealer that will help me get the title for it. In the mean time, i'm trying to identify it because the engine needs some repair. The last 4 digits of the H.I.N. is (M8ll), which i believe is an 81. The last 2 digits are just a straight line, i'm not sure if they are a 1 or an I. Also i'm trying to find out which engine it has on it, the only identifying marks i can see on the engine is Evinrude XP & V-4. Does anyone know the the different H.P. engines for that year & if i give the entire v.i.n. to someone, can it narrow down the manufacture. Thanks.

Can't help with boat, but if you look on the port transom bracket, there is supposed to be a tag there with the Model and Serial # on it. If it's not there, look on the engine block for a large welch plug. Model number should be on there also. Post the model number and we can give the year and info on the engine.

Your post really should have been posted in the Outboard Discussion (Non-Repair) forum. A Mod will probably move it over there for you.

By the by....if you can't find a model number, post a pic of the engine...cover and block...sometimes the year or close to it can be figured out.
