Help!!

Is there a way to determine if a alpha gen 2 lower unit is standard (RH) or counter (LH) rotation?

I have spinned the propshaft clockwise and the vertical driveshaft is spinning counter clockwise... Is this a counter or a standard rotating lower unit?

Please Help

Good grief man, you only posted 25 minutes ago. Give people a chance, free advise doesn't mean it's instantanious free advise.

Post a picture of your lower with the prop off and looking inside the exhaust.

When you say "lower unit" do you mean the whole outdrive or just the lower unit of the outdrive?
Is the drive original to the boat? Or is this some lower unit you bought off ebay or similar?

Its a drive I purchased from Ebay, and its just the lower assembly. I have a bad feeling its a counter rotating unit. If you move the shift shaft forward, the propshaft clicks when you spin it clockwise, when you move the shift shaft counterclockwise, the propshaft engages the driveshaft and rotates forward..

The seller stated it was pulled from a 1991 4.3 Mercruiser Gen 2. I didn't think they made these with counter rotating drives..

You can't tell by turning the shafts if it's a standard or counter rotating drive. The gears and shift dog clutch is exactly the same. The change is how the bearings are set up for forward thrust. The counter rotating drive has different bearings and carrier in the aft of the drive than a standard rotation. You could actually use a counter rotating lower, but you would have to change the shifter to move the cable the opposite direction, and use a reverse rotation prop.

with the shift arm(shoe) in a straight line with the prop, it should lock counterclockwise(fwd )and with the arm fully counterclockwise it should lock clockwise(rev)
With the arm in a straight line, turn the driveshaft clockwise and the prop shaft should turn clockwise

Since you have both lower units, you might want to compare the aft bearing carrier. The counter rotation carrier is shorter. Look at these pictures as an example.

Thanks for the help guys. If it means anything the part number on the carrier is 73020-01 I think it appears to have features more like the longer carrier..
