Can anyone tell me if these two hoses should be connected? If so, what part am I missing to join them? They may be used for some option my boat doesn't have.

Re: Identify loose hose

Those do not look like hoses . . . but rather part of the shifting mechanism. Seems like they should be joined.

I think that's the end of your cable that I marked in red.....that goes thru the tube that you marked, but that's just a guess, mine's a V-8
Find the parts breakdown for your engine,

Yes that looks like the Shift Cable, at least that is the two peices in front of it that have small stainless steel cotterpins holding them to a stainless rod. I would say it is item "A" as shown in the pic below.

Looks at page 2A-13 in the service manual 14 (if you have a alpha1 gen2 outdrive) Looks like a pretty new motor you have...?

This manual was posted recently in the mercruiser section i believe.

It's also called a 'shift assister', and it's broken.... It's spring loaded and helps shift out of gear... Cost you about $26... Yes, you need it...

This is the same engine I have in my 2008 Rinker 192. From the picture of another boat with same engine it doesn't look like that hose you highlighted in red is coming out the shift assistant. My eyes are bad though.

Re: Identify loose hose

part is optional, shifts just fine without it. should have been called" Operator Enhancer"
Betting your name is Frank and you have a 4 cylinder down Seaside too.

I bought the boat a month ago and it seems to be working fine without it but I just wanted a second opinion. Sorry, my name isn't Frank but thanks for the info ;-)

Thanks to everyone that replied. I have a couple more questions but I'll start a new thread.
