Hi everyone,

I am going to take a look at a boat this weekend, and the seller can't tell me the year or model of the motor. I asked him to look for the welch plug, etc. and he either isn't looking for it, or can't find it. Was wondering if based on a picture anyone could give me a rough estimate of the year? Never seen this paint scheme on a cowl before:

Thanks!

Mid eighties. I saw an '85 35 hp that looks exactly like that...

Thanks! I looked at the Shop Evinrude page, and it appears there was no 35HP Evinrude in 1985.

I'll verify it on the plug when I go take a look. The guy said it starts up just fine when cold, but has to crank a bit to start when warmed up, but once started it runs fine. Anything in particular to look for?

My previous motor was a 73 Johnson 25, which appears to be a much simpler design than this one.

Thanks!

Nothing like taking it for a spin first - can he launch it for a quick run? Seeing it run in a barrel is one thing, but not the same as actual use.

Also, I would reccomend against buying that sofa chair - looks to be in need of too much restoration!

It may be hard starting cold, because it my need a little tweeking on the primer. I believe those had a primer, instead of a choke. I would take a compression test and check the gear oil in the lower unit.

Your 73 Johnson 25, was infact a lot simpler design. It was one of the old style 22 cube motors, based on the old '57 18hp design. Great motors too. These later motors are okay, but not quite as easy and inexpensive to work on as that old 25 you had.

Come one allCAD, that chair would be perfect for the front porch with dogs laying all over it. :D:D

Hey Zephyr,

The guy actually says it starts better cold than warm. I definitely plan on checking the LU oil and doing a compression test on it. Can use the OMC Hi-VIS as LU oil in this one?

Yes.

EDIT:
FWIW, that motor is not happy in weedy waters. Weeds will obstruct the water intake and burn it up. OK in clear water though. The problem was fixed in newer models.

Re: ID 35HP Evinrude?

Hi-Vis is used in pretty much all manual shift motors. The electric shift use a different kind of oil that is non-conductive.....for obvious reasons. LOL

Starts better cold, than warm? Then it must be getting a little too much fuel at start up then. I would go through the carb when you get it and make sure your float level is correct. The primer circuit could be using too much fuel too. A rebuild on that carb could be in order, but no worries. That's an inexpensive job. Your main concern is the compression and the lower end.

FYI - 1979 was a regular butterfly choke, not a primer system...

Hi,

Quick update on this since I did buy it. It is indeed a 1979. Compression tester came it at both cylinders around 139/140, so that made me happy.

The guy I bought it from didn't seem to know much about motors. When I was starting it up in the tank, I asked him to vent the tank and he gave me a blank look. I did it and he said he'd never done that before. I think we found out the 'problem' he was having...

All around a real clean looking motor and seems to run like a champ.

Congrats.
He's probably kicking himself now, LOL.

I always admired that color. What are you putting her on? Lets see some pics.

Sure thing. It's a 1974 Northwoods 14' Classic Fisherman. Ridiculously clean on the inside. Someone gave it some love at one point. At work, so I don't have the pics, but I'll get some up!

139 and 140 compression? NICE!! You have a nice long lifer there. Take care of it and you'll be able to pass it down to your grand kids. :D

I drained the LU oil last night and it was BLACK and smelled a bit. Not horrible smell, but made me wonder when was the last time someone changed it. Going to run some stabilized gas through it tonight or tomorrow, then fog the cylinders for the winter. Cursed Minnesota winter.

Well, black is much better than milk shake LOL Cool deal. Yea, I have a sister over there and it gets mighty cold there in the winter, from what she has told me
If you can, I would stash that puppy indoors :D

Yep, it will live in the garage. Nice thing about the 14' is that I can stash my snowblower and mower in front of it.

Does anyone know if the original coils on this one were brown/tan?

Yep, Minnesota winters are rough. I keep my motors garaged and the boat is in indoor storage. Sorry, can't help with the coils question.

Oh, btw, the link to your pics didn't work.
