My backup GPS with an internal antenna reads the same as my primary GPS with its antenna mounted on the top of the hardtop.
Having said that, I get consistently better signal strength from the roof mounted antenna. Don't know if the hardtop is causing the difference or the remote antenna is a better quality receiver.
What are you doing with a GPS antenna on a VHF radio?
No GPS signal available from your chart plotter?
