Do any of the boaters out there like to do any ice fishing. I've never done it. It looks like fun.

Re: Ice Fishing

It's good fun that's for sure! We were on our way to some good ice being made but then we got dumped on with snow so that will slow the ice down.

Re: Ice Fishing

I used to until about 3 years ago.

Very hard to C&R while ice fishing and I just don't like the taste of trout that much. So I was killing fish I didn't want.

Set up my 18' for winter fishing on our big lake instead.

Gotta have a shack. A couple of cold ones don't hurt either.....

Re: Ice Fishing

Well my standard answer is, "not too much. Ice fishing scratches up my boat!"

I do have an auger and half-a-dozen tip-ups. Have done it in the past. Did it last winter once or twice. I like the sound of water against my boat better. Perch under the ice are supposed to be the best but I like perch anyway.

Re: Ice Fishing

I ice fish as much as possible, but it only amounts to about 5 to 10 trips a season. I have all the gear and most of my snowmobiling clothes work for ice fishing as well. On a good lake the action can be non-stop for hours, and we can haul home 25 to 50 perch, northerns, pickerel and lakers on a good day. As much as I love summer fishing, a perfect winter day on the ice is a lot more fun. We bring stoves and cook, talk with other fishermen etc. The only setback is getting up at 4AM, but you have to do that if you're going to be fishing during prime time.

Re: Ice Fishing

My son and I have been ice fishing for a number of years. We enjoy our time on the ice without huts. But either way its a great escape.
We fish a pickeral lake and find the bite best just before dark and after dark. However I must admit to not trying first thing in the morning.
Hard water is a definate fix for the fishing junky

I have to figure out how to spit my coffee away from the keyboard and then how to get the taste out of my nose. Post another one like that so I can clear my sinuses .....

You really crack me up... I cannot think of another soution for you either.........

There's nothing like catching fish through a hole in the ice while sitting in a nice warm ice shante during a blizzard, on the day after new years with a little hair of the dog.

Re: Ice Fishing

I tried ice fishing one time last winter. It was brutally cold (like 10 degrees with a stiff wind), we didn't have a shack, and I didn't catch anything. Still, can't wait to try again this winter! Maybe this time with a shack and a little "antifreeze". ;)

The shack is the way to go, especialy if it is windy. Take your radio and some brandy, and lots to eat. It is what you make it. It can be a blast. The more people the more fun you have. Take the kids and some skates if it is smooth, otherwise take the foot ball. Have fun!

Re: Ice Fishing

Be forewarned:
A local guy went ice fishing before dawn last Sunday to a new place he hadn't tried. He no sooner had his auger on the ice when a thunderous voice came from above "YOU CANNOT FISH HERE TODAY". He was quite frightened, quickly gathered his gear and moved to the adjacent pond. Again, the started setting up and again the voice from above sounded "YOU CANNOT FISH HERE TODAY EITHER". Perplexed, he shouted "GOD, WHY CAN I NOT FISH?" The voice said. "I MANAGE THIS DOUBLE RINK ARENA. GET YOUR BUTT OUTTA HERE, JACKASS."
