Ice fishing-What to use for bait ?

Good day Y'awl. Living in a northern region I plan to get acquainted with ice fishing this coming winter. What is used for bait for fishing on ice ? Tx

Waxworms, wigglers, just about any kind of insect larvae you can find will work fine. Also a lot of lure choices such as , swedish pimple, teardrops etc., are effective without bait, just the flash and/or action can trigger hits. Depends on your target species and what they're in the mood for

I carry a whole slew of little jigs. the gil pill is probably my favorite. after that is the ratso and shrimpo. Eye dropper jig tipped with a minnow works well too. Jigging rapala, Swedish pimple sometimes as well. I usually tip with a waxie and figure out what mood the fish are in and match my jigging technique to match.

3 more months and Ill be in my portable with the heater on talking to little moving lights on my flasher.....

pecheux: what are your target species? Lots of good options already mentioned but it does depend on your target species.

What works well in north idaho is the ratso or shrimpo jig tied with a 6-12" leader below a spoon such as the sweedish pimple or castmaster. I've cought all species on these jigs from jumbo perch to 8lb trout. You can order them at www.customjigsandspins.com

Minnows are good, but some areas in Quebec doesn't allow live bait, so check first. I've had good consistency with small sacks of fish eggs. It also is very dependent on what species your going for. Check with the locals for new ideas.

Up here in n.y. we use a jig with fish eyes or spikes, minows are an option.
