In compiling the list for my Ford 302/331 stroker motor, I need to obtain a 4 bbl intake manifold. I understand that you can waste a lot of money in trying to build a marine motor with lot of top end where you don't need it and actually lose performance where you do need it.

It appears that I can get a used Edelbrock Performer Intake for less than I can find a stock oem 4 bbl manifold. I am running a closed cooling system so aluminum should not be a problem. Plus it is lighter.

The question is would I hurt low to midrange torque with the Edelbrock compared to the OEM iron manifold. Edelbrock rates it's Peformer for increased performance from 0 to 5500 rpm.

Any opinions would be valued.

It'll breathe better than a cast iron intake, so it should perform better anywhere you put the throttle. One minor consideration is that they expand at a different rate than the iron motor. Sometimes this leads to leaks. Something to keep an eye on, but nothing to lose any sleep over.

Boomyal,
If you're going with an Aftermarket, Aluminum Manifold, the Edlebrock Performer is a Good Choice.....
As long as you've got the corrosion thing covered, with the closed cooling, I can't see Any problems.....
It's a Good Dual-plane low rise manifold...
Like you say, Keeping your motor Design insync with All your Choices of parts is Very Important... You only want to Feed your motor as Much as it can expell on the exhaust side....
High rise manifolds,+ heads with Too Big of intake runners will move the powerband Up the RPM range, If your Exhaust is up to the task......
Sounds like a Great Choice... Go for it...

You might consider the Offenhauser Dual Port Manifold for the small block Ford. Manifold was designed for low to mid range torque. Two single plan manifolds (one for the primaries and one for the secondaries) stacked on top each other. Old technology for the street engines, great for marine engines.

The Edelbrock Manifold is a good choice and resonably priced, The only thing being a marine aplication that I would concider is painting it with engine paint! I know they look great when new, but I will guarentee you it will oxidise  quickly and look like crap in six months!!

Thanks for all of the comments. I just got a used one on Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI tem&rd=1&category=36474&item=2455211751&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT

Lubedude, I already anticipated the oxidation part. Since it's used I don't have to watch it turn ugly. I'll clean it up, spray it with zinc chromate then paint it same as the engine. I also just got a like new Holley 600 cfm marine carb for half of the new price.

I also found a good clean '72 302 block for the base of my Stroker.

Ooh, I can feel the power now.

You and I sound a lot alike! Its fun collecting all the parts and getting good deals on them! The secret is not to get in a hurry!! It took me six months to get all the parts together for my new Computer, but it was worth it in the long run!

Keep us posted on your engine buildup, (Iknow you will)!

I agree with the others .. The Performer is a good, all-RPM choice, excelent for a boat in my opinion. The 2-level, cross-H design keeps the mixture moving fast in the intake at lower engine speeds. Just the effect needed for good mid-range power for acceleration and throttle response when you can't wind to full RPM right away. 600 CFM carb should be plenty for 302, maybe even a touch big at less than full RPM.

DieselWalt:

No, not exactly, I made sure I used a motherboard that could be upgraded! I dont expect to have to upgrade though for awhile! It was kinda funny as I was gathering up all the parts I needed, as I kept getting the latest and greatest and that went on for quite a while, then I finally had to just say, "Build the Da*m thing now or you never will"!

I know youre just funnin with me!! :D

JetAaron
That 600 cfm Edelbrock is going to be used on a 331 cid Stroked 302.

Lube... sounds like my old dual cpu box I was going to build a few years back...

spent BIG BUCKS on a dual Slot1 board to build a dual P2-450 machine.... when the 450 was the fastest cpu out

the cpu's were so expensive, I got a celery 300 to get me by until I could get the 450's. year later, I go to get my matched pair of 450's.... and find out slot 2 was bad! AAHHHRRRGGG Onboard SCSI, everything.... sold it on ebay for like $50 and gave up on dual...

since I quit gaming, I've gotten by on the same box for over 2 years now.

Boomyal,
I Know this is a Little Off-Topic.....
But I just Can't see why you're not Starting with the 351w in the 1st place....?????
Most of the add-ons will Fit from 1 block to the other.....

Too wide Bondo. I looked into that first. I have a one piece fiberglass molded doghouse that has seats tucked in on each side. Plus my boat has a lower gunnel than a typical SeaRay style, so the extra weight would make it set too low when I have a boatload of players. After reading this article,
http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2002/04/331/index.shtml
and on the recommendation of a knowledgable guy here,
http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/119417?it=0
I decided that the stroker would fit the bill.

Okay, I'm no Ford fan so I don't know a whole lot about them...but don't 302s and 351s use the same block? How would the external dimensions differ?

Re: iboats Computer Forum-All Topics Fair Game :>)

I thought this had become a computer thread? ;)
Sorry to hear that WillyB. About not being a Ford fan, that is.
The answer is yes and no. The 351w is basically the same block as the 302 except it has longer cylinders/higher deck. Being that it is a 90 deg block, that sends the decks out about 1 1/4" further on each side. That also makes the heads farther apart requiring a wider heavier intake manifold and the both of them together makes the whole motor about 2" higher. Otherwise except for the oil pan, heads and exaust manifolds can be interchangable. Distribs, waterpumps, timing covers are also interchangable. The total engine weight is about 80 lbs higher than a 302.

That's Why I'm a Chevy Guy......
What Fits a Small Block, Fits All the small blocks,
And Some of the Big Blocks.......

With Fords.....
Even 351 parts Don't Fit All the 351s....
351 Windsor
351 Cleveland
351 Modified...
