Removed my outdrive today and stripped all the paint off it. Masked it off with duct tape then used paint striper a putty knife, and a high speed air grinder with a wire wheel attached to it. It is cleaned down to the bare aluminum, I plan on cleaning the surface with aluma prep then zinc chromemate primer, then prime, then chassis saver black.
two questions:

1. does the painting prep seem ok ?
2. does anyone know where I can get Mercruiser drive stickers for a PRE-Alpha drive ?

Prep looks good!! Just needs to be bare metal. In your sequence, you may not need to prime before the final coat. I didnt on a 1980 Merc 70 o/b. But make sure you follow the directions exactly on the can of zinc chromate. The next coat of paint after the zinc chromate has to be applied in a specific time period after the application of zinc chromate, or you will have to let it dry completely then rough up the finish. I found stickers on ebay for my motor. Enjoy!!

Nice work . . . I did a similar thing to my Bravo drive over the past few weeks.

You should Google for some labels for the outdrive . . . you may find some on eBay, etc.. They can be pricey. I know the original sticker set for my outdrive is about $150 . Recently, Mercruiser has newer ones that are about $25 . . .

nearpar I used to machine class D aluminum truck wheels and we also polished them to a chrome like shine and then we coated them with a product called durashine it was like a hard clearcoat that was extremly durable on any aluminum surface painted or not it might be worth a try to coat that baby with if you can find it. But it does look good nice job!

It looks great. Are you going to spray it with any kind of anti-fouling paint? I sprayed our Bravo lll drive with shiny black until I realized that all of it sits underwater when the boat's in the slip! I resprayed it with Trilux 33 anti-fouling paint. It's not the prettiest paint job, but it keeps most barnacles off. Hy

it is not recommended that drives or transoms be painted with anti-fouling paint due to some of the base chemicals used in the anti-fouling paint actually speeding up the corrosion that occurs to aluminum - your drive and transom actually rot away under the paint

i have actaully seen people paint over the anodes on drives and transoms thus rendering them useless

mercury recommends using quicksliver aluminum primer and quicksilver phantom black paint for ALL drives and transom assys
