I have pulled the OMC 140 (3.0L) motor out of my boat, replaced the bearings, etc... I need to know what is absolutely necessary to hook up to safely start and run my engine on the stand for an hour or so. I plan to bypass the alternator by having all power come from the battery and have the battery on a charger simultaneously so it doesn't go dead.
1. gas line into gas can.
2. water hose hooked to water intake on water pump housing. (will turn on as soon as motor starts)
3. battery (-) grounded to engine block or stand.
4. hot wire from battery (+) to coil (+). This was how I cooked my first coil as I am NOT a mechanic(and do not REALLY know what the hell I am doing) I forgot to put the (ballast?)resistor in there. The guy at Autozone gave me another one at no charge because it was still under warranty even though I told him I cooked it because I didn't know any better. Do i put it inline between the battery(+) and the coil(+)?
5. then a power wire to the starter (+) then I crank it over with a screwdriver touching the starter(+) and the starter bendix(+).
There is already a wire from the coil(-) that goes into the bottom of the distributor.
Is there any other hook up I am missing to be able to start and run this motor on the stand? I plan to run it for 1-2 hrs then if all is well, change the oil and reinstall it back in the boat and hopefully get this project boat into the water before Christmas! Thank you, Drewmaster
