The Trailer Brakes Should already be wired back to the trailer plug outlet on the truck..........
My Ford is,+ It's a 96........

They make a "Plug & Play" wiring harness adapter for the Ford pickups..........

Once you get to the trailer,........................................

Re: I want to put electronic brakes on.

The only thing I see now at the back of my Ford 150 pickup truck year 2000, is a trailer lighting plug. I think is has 5 wires coming from it.
Brake, left, right turn, running and ground.
All for lights.
The truck was in a accident one time got hit in the rear rear bumber was replaced. So maybe someone at the body shop did something with the plug.
I mighthave to rewire and I try tofigure out how it works a little before hand.

You want electric brakes for a boat trailer? I have heard that Fulton makes some that are for boat trailers, but anyone I asked said they won't last in saltwater which is all we have around here. So I just went with the plain old surge system, which actually works well if kept in adjustment. The electric brakes have a 7 pin connector usually, that is what I have on the Jeep and I use a 7 to 4 pin adaptor for this trailer. Some use a 5 pin for the newer trailers that use disc brakes that need the reverse lockout soleniod that is powered by the back up light circuit.
Do you mean electric over hydraulic? That uses electric control to operate an electric/hydraulic actuator? Probably the best control but more complexity.

I just mean electric brakes. No hydraulic. Fresh water use only.

I'm pretty sure you need the 7 pin harness for that, maybe you can check with Ford to see if it can be added to your truck. It may also be available in the aftermarket as well.
Check with Fulton to find out about the electric brakes for boat trailers.
Also you will have to add an electric brake controller to run the electric brakes.

Have you tested the 5 pins? Not very common for the factory plug to be wired the way you indicate. Should be Left turn/stop, right turn/stop, running lights, ground, and electric brakes.

I checked and for some reason Ford started using 4 prong plug for some reason on some of there 2000 trucks and has 5 wires going to it.
I went www.trailerwiring.com and asked them they told me how to do it. It's a great place for tech support.

Re: I want to put electronic brakes on.

The five wire setups are for vehicles with separate brake, tail, and turn circuits (not dual filaments). Seven wires are typically used for lighting and trailer brakes although if you have a standard four wire system, you can run the extra two wires from the controller to a separate plug at the back of the vehicle. You would then need to have two plugs on the trailer as well (lighting and brakes). A pain, but it works. The money spent on connectors could be spend on a seven wire plug & socket and rewiring is not rocket science.

Yup, you need the 7 pin harness to do it properly. I run electrics on my tandem boat trailer and love them. My '99 F-150 was easy though as it had the factory towing package that already had the 7 pin RV type plug and was already factory wired for the controller. Upinsmoke is correct that you can get around it, but is also correct that you should go ahead and wire in teh 7-pin. To make life easier, pig-tail in a regular 4-pin in case you need it in the future.

Regular RV electric brakes work well if you are freshwater only. The fultons are more resistant to salt, but I think they are regular brakes with a coating.

5 pin if I recall is for trailers with disc brakes that need the back up solenoid to dump the master cyl pressure so you can back up. Disc brakes can't be made freebacking like drums.
7 pin is for electric brakes.
Better to put in the 7 pin, and if you need only the 4 pin or 5 pin for certain trailers you can just get the 7 to 4 or 7 to 5 adapters.
