I think my choke is faulty. Please advise if so.

I've got a 1979 Envinrude 55HP CD ignition. When starting, cold or warm, pressing the choke button and turning the key at the same time does not close the butterflys. Previous to this problem, when I presses the choke button, I could hear and see the butterflys going up and down with the engine cover off. Now, nothing. Would this be an electrical problem or a faulty choke solenoid? I had a second hand one installed about 5 months ago, after my other one went, but now have the same problem. Manually holding the butterflies in place when starting starts the motor first time.

Hi John....

Get a VOM meter and measure the voltage at the choke solenoid. If you have voltage there with the button/toggle switch engaged, 12 volts DC, then check for any binding of the choke linkage. If all looks well, probably the solenoid has failed.

If no voltage at the solenoid, check the choke button/toggle switch. These have been known to go bad.

How bizzare. Went out to the boat and the choke is fine now. Could it be that my choke only plays up when the egine is warm and what could be causing this?

Sounds like a lose connection or the choke switch is wanting to go bad. Make sure the choke plunger is free in the solenoid and not binding.
