I think I killed it - for good !

Took the boat out today. Everything ran fine last weekend by the way. Today, things were sluggish, the engine would get up to 3800 rpm and were still slower than a turtle, then it would start picking up slowly/gradually. Suddenly I start hearing a whirring noise coming from the engine, I slow the throttle, it starts getting shaky, then it just seizes up and died. I take the engine cover off and see a pool of oil. Engine is most likely dead at this point, but i'm just trying to figure out what happened. anyone have a guess?

Do you recall the engine temp or oil pressure readings?

What engine, drive, boat, etc.

Is there any oil in the oilpan (what is the dipstick showing?)

Sorry, missed all the details in anger. I have a 88 wellcraft classic, has a 4cyl ford engine i believe, an omc cobra lower unit. The oil pressure gauge did show a reading when i started out but i dont remember what, and it was at zero before it died. The temp was floating somewhere between 180 and 190. The dipstick was pretty much dry when i took a look after the whole incident.

Could you tell where the oil came from?
Did it leak enough oil for the engine just to run dry and lock up?

I can't tell where the oil came from, no detached hoses. I have to go do a throrough check. It looked like ALL the oil drained and locked the engine. I was told it could be a gasket or some seal at the bottomside of the engine. I'll try to figure out the source of the leak but I think the engine is definately locked up/dead.

I can't see the oil or know if it's gear lube or engine oil, but before you scrap the engine pull the drive and see if it will turn over.
Might also remove and look at your oil filter and count the gaskets. Two gaskets where only one should have been has killed more than one engine.

Do you check your bilge and engine before and after each trip?

Did you check the oil before you started? When was the oil checked last? What did the engine sound like while it was warming up? when I pour the fuel to my boat, 3800 rpm and I'm flying, slow as a turtle and I'm finding out what is wrong. I work at a fairly large marina and I'm seeing a lot of people this season sticking their toys in the water and starting them without looking at a thing. Alot of my customers will call ahead and ask me to service their boat, check all fluids, fuel, and electricals. An hour later, the ones that didn't bother checking their own boats are asking me if I have a second to look at their boat. Go figure.

if temp was zero sounds like you had nothing but air in the block. No coolant and no oil in the pan = very bad news.

I don't think he ever wrote that.

Follow DonS, pull the drive and see if that frees up the engine (elimination of a variable... a frozen drive).

Possibly a hole rusted in the oil pan.

I had a pan rust out on me. Fortunately, I was checking the bilge that day.
