Ok I did some thinking about buying from the dealer. I would have no problem buying mail order if something just broke down in a few years and had to bring it to get repaired. But then I thought about if something needs adjusting or something right off the bat, then I wouldn't have a place to bring it. Thanks for mentioning that.

Now, the Yamaha 4 stroke 8 and Tohatsu 9.8 would both be about $1950 total after tax. Both are about 80 pounds. I am thinking the Yamaha here just because parts are more available and there are more repair shops around, and I see parts for them in catologs while I dont ever see Tohatsu. What do you guys think here? And would I be losing that much in power? Doesn't seem like that much. I kind of like the shift lever on the tiller handle of the Yamaha too. Alright, well I am going to buy this tomorrow probably so let me know any last minute advice. I'm getting nervous here to buy this! Hehe. Thanks again guys.

You are making the right decision.
The Tohatsu parts are ridiculously expensive, should
you need any service parts like water pump or
gaskets. And having a selling dealer to help with
adjustments or warranty is also worth something.

Sounds good, Dan. I can't imagine you will be dissapointed with the Yamaha. Good idea to buy where dealers are in good supply..

Ok I'll let you know later on after I get it for sure. I'm sure 8 HP will be fine for a kicker for whatever boat I get in the future as well. I have seen smaller motors on boats bigger than I will ever get! And it should be fine to for a little 10 or 12 foot boat too (I have a 12' besides but no trailer and that would be kind of a pain to lug an 80 pound motor around with no trailer!) Now I just gotta figure out what shaft length to get. Either one would fit on this boat, I might have to tilt it up though when the bracket is up because I think it would hit the water with the long shaft. So I don't know. I read other posts where people said you could always raise a long with a jack plate. So I don't know, I'll see what the dealer says (if they even have any more longs). But you guys can add your two cents worth in the meantime. Thanks again!

By the way, am I going to need to get a lower pitched prop, or is the one that it comes with fine?
