New boat to me this summer, 1st trip to water to check running of motor, leaks, bilge pump and live well, etc. No issues, a few things to be replaced such as bilge pump and livewell pump..both dead in the water (pun intended). Not a single leak of hint of water in the bilge! Hooray!.
Second trip out a couple days later to check running of engine after some minor work. Also, I had removed bilge and livewell pumps in preparation for installing replacements.
I back trailer into the lake, slide the boat back and tie it off at the dock. Pull the car and trailer away and park. I return and step from the dock into the boat and hear this strange sound... like water running.. I must certainly be hearing things, so I open the hatch to turn on the Perko switch so I have power to crank the engine, and there is 10-12 inches of water in the bottom of my bass boat!
Yes, I put in the plug, but did not think that removing livewell pump would leave open hoses to the bottom of the transom... water flowing in at DOUBLE the rate as if I had just left the plug out... and no bilge pump to get it out!
I made a quick run back up to get the car and trailer and quickly backed it down the ramp..(and it never goes straight when you are rushed). although crooked, I did get the boat back on the trailer in time and hauled it out of the water before any damage was done. It did take about an hour for the boat to drain however.
Lesson learned, the drain plug is NOT the only hole in the bottom of the boat to be concerned with!
