New at boating!! My boat has a 115 outboard motor, the boat has a fuel tank in the boat... I pump gas through the side of the boat but how am I suppose to add the oil as it is a 50:1 ratio?? Am I suppose to just add the oil the same way? How does it mix right??

Well I guess I doesnt have a seprate oil tank?? The only line I seen going in the motor was the fuel line....

Unless you have a separate tank for the oil (oil injection), I have always added it to the gas thru the same hole you put the gas in. Someone will chime in that knows for sure but this is how I have always done it.

1st make sure you have a 2 stroke. then no oil injection and separate oil tank. if none of the former i used to pour the oil in 1st, then gas. it shook it up enough by pouring in the gas to mix it.

If you are concerned about mixing the proper amount of oil, they sell these plastic bottles with the ratios/gallons marked on the side. It's almost like a large measuring cup you would use in a kitchen. They cost just a few dollars and take the guess work out of mixing the correct amount of oil to fuel. Many of the boating and marine stores sell them.

Yes, just put the oil in the tank then the gas. I have a plastic bottle that has all the gas to oil ratios per gallon printed on it. If you keep track of your fuel gage on the boat it wont take long to figure out how many gallons it takes to fill your tank from half full or empty to full etc. This way you can just pre measure your oil as you go. It won?t hurt if you go a little over on the oil mix, better more oil than not enough. Putting the oil in first then the gas helps mix them together. Driving to the ramp also helps to mix them.

it doesnt matter which u add first but if your are going to fill her up all the way do oil first then gas just incase u fill it too far with gas. also the movement of your boat on the water or trailer will mix up just fine.

Rather simple actually, pump the gas in see how mush it took.

Than add the proper amount of oil thru the same hole as the gas. The movement of the boat will mix it.

Been the same way forever, don't like oil injectors, and my brother bought a brand new bass boat, disconnected the oil injector. Mix it with the gas that way you know the motor is getting oil with a 2 stroke.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: I probably have the dumbest question of all!!

I didn't see where anyone told him to remove the engine cover to see if there is an oil resevoir on the engine like the one shown below. Nor did anyone ask what make and model engine this is. While many people have no idea what the difference is between a two and four stroke engine, four strokes generally have that bit of terminology spelled out on the engine cover and if it does, the engine is like your car -- it has oil in the engine crankcase and therefore needs regular oil changes just like your car. If it is a two stroke, then the engine either has an external or under-cowl oil tank if it is oil injected or if no tank (as in NOT oil injected) then oil needs to be added to the fuel. Since one has no idea how much fuel is already in the tank, one must add oil in proportion to the amount of fuel you will be adding. If you know the tank will take at least six gallons, add a pint of oil and add six gallons of fuel. Repeat the process as needed. You might even add three gallons of fuel at a time which would require 1/2 pint of oil.

Here is a two stroke engine with an oil resevoir:

You would get a better reply if you gave us the year of the engine or the model number.

Re: I probably have the dumbest question of all!!

if i remember corectly my girlfriends dads boat has a 115 envirude of about the same year... it is a 2 stroke motor and does not have oil injection.

so yes you would have to mix your oil and gas on that model.

i own an 87 glastron with the mercruiser 150 on the back and it is oil injected and i have the oil resivour tank under the engine cover as well as an aditional oil tank right beside my battery on the right side of the boat under the rear seat.
