So I decided to give it a try and ordered one last night. I should have it within a week. Anyone been using it? I think TD mentioned he got one. Give me the dirt on it if any. Thanks.

I have it. It seems to work as good as Vonage did. No troubles so far!

Magic jacks are good, however, you need to keep in mind that when the power goes out, or if the computer crashes, no phone. You plug the jack into the phone, on the USB port, so no power to the computer, or no internet connection, no phone. Just something to think about during power outages.

From seeing the commercial it was hard for me to take the product seriously but I haven't heard anything negative about it. The only decent Internet I can get is DSL which requires a phone line so none of the VOIP products really work out for me.

If you still have a land line hooked up to your house, and no phone service, you still can dial 911. you should still have a dial tone even if you have had it shut off. if you try to make a regular call it usually go to the phone company.

It works on DSL as well.....
I got it just to try out, in addition to my regular phone.
Works pretty good. Will be ditching my land line shortly!:D

It'll work with DSL no problem. As long as you have internet, you can use VoIP. Bandwidth becomes a bit of an issue in some cases but in this day in age, unless you're using dial-up or satellite internet.... there are no problems.

As far as if you still have a land-line for 911, that is true. However, being a former telephone repair man, chances of you having that line there are slim to none if you cancel service. It is known as express dial tone, and you can dial 911 or 0, but depending on the trouble in your area, chances are that pair will get stolen.

The magic jack was meant for dsl subscribers. Anything better than dial-up internet is compatible. It is a great service, with a great price, but you still have to pay for hi-speed internet.

We have it. It does just stop working for no reason at times.I have to re-boot the pc and it starts working again.
The only other downside is the pc must be powered on 24/7
It does have 911 service too..

I understand that.:p

It's just that if you have DSL you're already paying for a phone line. I rarely ever dial long distance so I forget about that benefit.

From your other posts I did find it odd the way you worded your post and figured you knew it would work. Just wanted to make sure you weren't losing your mind lol

I think up here our telco charges different then down there with what you guys get for DSL. Here you pay a base charge for the phone (~$20) and then another $30 (basic basic)+ for the internet service. The use of the phone line isn't included in the internet fee. Probably why I was confused by your post.

Soon, the gummint will route all the traffic through their snooper boxes. Then you can expect about 50%, or less service. It'll be like third world electric or phone service.

Did you have to install any software on your pc or all it needs is the power from the usb connector? my pc power supply provides constant power whether the pc is powered on or not. Would it works if the pc is in standby or sleep mode?

Re: I ordered a MagicJack---It arrived

I got it in the mail yesterday. Plugged it in and about 5 mins later it took off. It gives you choices of area code and area prefix at the registration screen. It works great so far. It has voice mail and 911 service. There is a user interface which has keypad, caller id, contact list and a few other apps. You can use a headsets and this GUI to make/receive call just like a regular phone. This feature is great if you don't feel like getting up to go get the phone. I believe the embedded software which automatically installed prevents the computer to go into stand by mode no matter what. You can shutdown but no stand by. It appeared that you have to dial the area code of any phone number and when anyone calls they have to dial your area code too. I'm not too clear about that yet. The only downside so far is I need to get an energy efficient pc.
