The shift lever in my 1998 Wellcraft 2000 SS is sloppy and looks outdated. It feels clunky and the plastic is discolored and it just looks old. I'm wanting to replace just the shift mechanism (not cable as I think its still good) with a new tight unit that looks more contemporary. How do I know what out there will work for what I have? My shifter is side mounted and mates up to a VP SX-C1 outdrive. Motor is a 5.7 liter GL model, carbureted.
I see a few shifter options on ebay that look cool, but have no idea if they will work for my setup. What do I need to look for specifically? I have tilt/trim but no trailer button like a merc has and then just basic forward/reverse. I have a safety switch, but its currently mounted on the dash but it could be relocated to the shifter if needed.

Looks like the Uflex B184 universal fit would work for me.

You're close with the Uflex B184, but get the B184MERC. It has all the Mercruiser cable adapters. You can keep the MOB safety switch on the dash and add a trailer switch.

GA, he is running a VP, not a Mercruiser.

Wish I could, but yeah, I have the VP. The MERC one is cheaper on Amazon.com. I wonder what the difference is? It might just be the accessory pack that comes with it. /shrug.

Buy the Volvo shifter. They are very reasonably priced. Unfortunately, you will have to replace the cables as the ones you have have the OMC ends on them since your controller is likely the OMC controller from the joint venture years.

Here is an example of one. Just need to make sure the one you buy has the trim button on it.

I did the exact same swap many years ago.

If this is the control you currently have, that's the OMC control that Volvo used for the first few years of the joint venture:

Bruce, that is exactly the shifter I have. My budget is pretty small right now for this so I was hoping to find an inexpensive solution and your link looks good. I have to replace both throttle and shift cables? I need to figure out which ones those are (part numbers).

EDIT: I have to believe people at the volvopentadotcom online store purposely make it hard to find things. I can't figure out where to get the cables I need. You'd think they would be in the same area the shifter is, but apparently not. There are Xact cables, whatever those are, but they are probably made for the Xact shifters I'm guessing?

I'm also looking for a replacement steering cable and so logically, I clicked on steering system. There are no cables listed there, just tie bars, cylinders, etc.

You order by length. The length of your current cables will be marked near the end of the cables.

I like the TFExtreme cables

You will need cables with the 33C ends

Oops!

I was looking at a Merc thread just before and didn't flush the head.

Sorry for trying to lead you astray.

You would only find the Volvo cables on there anyway so need to search there. Not even sure if Volvo sources cables to be honest.

Do a search online for TFExtreme cables and figure out what part number you need assuming you know the length and you will need 33C ends.

I believe these are the ones I am recommending. Hard to tell with iBoats sometime.

Bruce, you've been very helpful, thank you. One last question. Do I need two cables total, one to the throttle and one to the outdrive? I haven't taken it apart yet to see exactly what's on there since it will mean downtime for the boat and my wife is trying to squeeze every available hour we aren't busy into boating.

Didn't see any numbers on the ends of the cable. Just a T which I think means Teleflex? Going to have to pull the cables and measure. Are they measured from tip to tip or barrel to barrel or what?

How about rebuilding the one you got ? I mean it sounds like you might need new bushings and clips as the plastic bushings would be the wear part right?

That was my first idea. I can probably get all the bushings and wear parts at the local hardware store or farm and home, but I figure I'll sell the one I have on ebay along with the cables and put a new one in because the plastic on the old one is a bit faded and we are slowly getting the boat looking newer again (bought a heavy duty sewing machine so my wife can redo the seats as well). The new shifter is scheduled to arrive on August 10th which is like over a week which seems crazy, so I'll have to take out the old cables, measure them, put them back in, put the shifter back in to use the boat this weekend, and then repeat the process when the new shifter gets here.

Luck was on my side. I went out to the boat this morning to pull the cables out and found that the part numbers for the cables are printed on the black cables about 2 feet in from the end. Also, both of my cables are 16 foot cables on my 20 foot boat. So, I'm going to order two 16 foot cables. Thanks!

Got everything in and realized I did not have a piece of trim I needed to finish the install. I had to order an entire new assembly so I can get the one piece out that was missing in my box and then send the order back and get reimbursed. UGH. Remind me never to purchase anything substantial from iboats again after this mess. It would have been far easier for them to place a call to the shipping dept and have them pull the piece and send it to me but instead we have to do this the hard way. I will say that the customer support person, Brooke, was very pleasant, despite my attitude towards the entire mess.

I know this is a very old thread but going to take a chance. I am currently replacing the exact same control and would like to use the Uflex B184 universal fit as well. My boat has a 1997 Johnson SPL outboard and the existing cables are Teleflex CC20513's. As a universal unit would this work with my existing cables?
