Could someone tell me the average cost of repairing a driveshaft seal and bearing in the transom of a 1986 Merc Cruiser 140 hp with alpha 1 unit? Thanks. Bob

Sounds like your talking about the gimbil bearing.
Dont know what you mean about the "driveshaft seal"? Are you talking about the bellows that is around the driveshaft? If so.. Replacement of the bearing and bellows with labor should be around 500.00

If your replacing the bellows. Buy the kit and replace all of them. Kit is around 80.00-100.00 depending on where you get it.

Make sure they grease the u-joints while they are in their.

Why do you want to replace.....Depending on what kind of noise you have is to what is to be replaced...most of the time

Trent,

I have been communicating with Gary fron NY through e-mail and had a mechanic look it over.
It might need a gimbal, u-joint, 3 boots, wter pump, seals in the top part of the stern drive, and throttle cable work (although it works ok). I thought there was a bearing around the driveshaft and a seal to keep the water from going inside the hull. I guess the boots are what keep the water out. I need to look at the manual at the library again.

A local mechanic just has open heart surgery so we might work something out doing the labor to save money and learn something about it.

Thanks for your interest Trent.
