I was informed by my mechanic that I have a cracked block on my 1991 Mercruiser I/O motor.
The motor is a 4.3L, 262 cid motor (water froze in it during winter). I am being told the only solution at this point is to replace
the motor. Can anyone tell me if this is truly my only repair option? If so, does anyone know
the best place to purchase another engine? Is buying a rebuilt engine a good option and
where can this be purchased?

fredrob fredrobert@attbi.com

A rebuilt motor is probably your best bet since you will find that a new motor from Mercury will be very expensive. Make sure you get a proper marine engine and not an automotive unit though. Depending on the exact location of the crack(s) in your block there may be an opportunity for a bandaid fix if you are so inclined. I have seen people fix external cracks with epoxy such as JB Weld with some success.

Good luck.

If you do choose to install a new Mercruiser motor you will get a better warranty than any rebuilder will be able to offer.

fredrob,Yes you need a new engine no you do not need a mercruiser replacement.Ive done a lot of research on this and can tell you that you can use an automotive long block with brass freeze plugs.Im sure Ill catch a lot of crap for saying this but it is true.Is your engine a closed cooling system?Used in salt or fresh water?I just replaced my 305 v8 and every internal part that was in my mercruiser were the same parts used in the automotive field.Used an automotive long block and saved over $1000.All the electronics have to be marine application but not the mechanical parts.Good Luck.wheelage
