I have a 98 4.3 mercruiser engine & need to change from mando to delco. I changed motors & the new motor came w/delco serpentine set up, the old motor was v belt mando.
anyone do this? I know i can do it ,i would love to hear from someone who has done it already.

You say your new motor has a Delco, and you want to change from Mando to Delco.
What are you trying to change? Wiring? Pulley?

wiring
the delco has a plug, the mando doesn't. also looks like the delco has more connections than the mando

Delcos are about as simple as they come, either a single wire to the battery or, a 3 wire system as shown in the link from Bt Doc. Be aware that on a 3 wire system you need some sort of a resistor or diode in the ignition + wire otherwise it will feed back and the motor wont shut off, An idiot light in the dash serves a tripple purpose, it serves as a resistor,it tells you the alternator is charging, and if it comes on while running its a good bet the belt came off.

the harness i have is a 4 wire harness, red, orange purple & black(ground)

the parts diagram I have shows the alternator I want to use & it is classified as a delco, yet the diagram from bt doc shows the bottom right alt as mando.

see phtos below, the alt w/out the wires is the one I want to connect. the wiring harness is a 4 wire harness as listed above.

Yes, it's marine, Merc has been using it since around 2000. It just doesn't have shielding you can see.

Why not keep it simple and just put a serpentine belt pulley on the mando alternator that you have? As far as I know all alternators use the same size shaft.

i would but the v belt alternator has a differnet bolt pattern & it was on the left side of the motor, the new set up cals for the alt to be on the right.

thanks don, just what I needed. the spade conector does not get used though huh?
anyone know where i can get one of those plugs for the alternator?
do they make a repair kit?

Merc doesn't use that connection, Volvo used it for the carbed engines to operate the automatic choke for the carb.

Might check with your local starter/alternator/electric motor shop. I would bet they can get you one of those connectors.
