Well heres the deal i just bought my old 1966 MFG Beachcomber back when i first bought this boat it was 100% orginal .
It had a 1966 Evinrude Sport Four 60HP .

Well i pulled that motor after tons of headaches and put a 95/96 48spl the boat went 36mph full of gear with me in it ... Then i sold it for some stupid Reason and 3-years later i tracked the guy who bought the boat down and paid decently to get it back lol.

Well now it has a 1983 Johnson 115hp w/tilt/trim 15/spline lower unit on the back .

Ive looked every were no cracks or anything on the transom but the boat runs in the mid 50mph range .Yes i know you dont have to run it that fast but im worried about the weight of the motor on the transom is there that much of a difference ? the sport four was a 4/cyl also .

I mean the 115 is in great shape and i can run 35/40 half throttle and its plenty fast for me its a cat fishing boat.

What do you guys think ? i looked up the info and i seen some say 65 and others say 90hp.

The plan is to keep this boat FOREVER! if i can run this motor till around march i will re-power with a 60/80 Yamaha (2stroke) or a Etec.

Let me know what you guys think.

Re: I need some help...

Running an overpowered boat is like drinking and driving... if anything ever happens it's going to be your fault because the boat was overpowered/you're drunk... but if nothing ever happens, you're cool.

I dunno about you, but this little "catch 22" always seems to bite me in the arse whenever I know about it but continue to do as I have been doing.

Since both motors( 115/old 60) are V-4 types and weigh about the same( 250 lbs?), weight is a non issue. If there is a capacity placard, you aren't supposed to exceed it.Mfgb66016.jpg This 1966 brochure says 65 hp. But if there is no placard( 1966 boat) you are fine.

The catch 22 here is that many states have laws that prohibit exceeding the rated HP as stated on the capacity label. You did not say how long the boat is. If it is under 20 feet, the USCG formula applies; Length ( ft) X Maximum Transom Width ( ft) X 2 - 90 = max rated HP. Round up to the nearest multiple of 5. example if it works out to 62, round to 65. The saving grace is the USCG regulation does not apply to boats made prior to 1972 but manufacturers used the same formula in 1966, it just wasn't a law then. Also there was no requirement then for a capacity label, but many mfgs put one on anyway. It was called a BIA label then (Boating Industry Association).

If the boat is 20 feet or more you can hang whatever you want on it.

Using that formula, it comes to 77 hp; rounded up to 80 hp.

Thanks a lot guys I found a guy who needs this 115 I'm gonna throw 60hp Yamaha low to mid 90s . I don't know the compression on it but if it fails I found a 90 50hp evinrude .

If both the motors are junk I'm gonna put some money down on a 60hp new etec or a Yamaha 60hp 4stroke . My buddy has a F150 I love how quite it is but I'm a 2 stroke guy :)
