I need help or some kind of direction on 2001 Evinrude 150 problem!!! UPDATE!

I have a 2001 Evinrude 150 Ram injection G04939630 serial #, only 85 hours on enigne. It idols fine, cold starts fine, takes off fine, plains fine, but once warmed up and more than half throttle or over mid range rmps then engine begines to studder. Its not spitting or smoking, it just not smooth and doesn;t feel right. I changed and indexted the plugs, no avail.

I was told it is either of the follwing:
Clogged fuel filter or tank screen
Bad lift pump (I think its this)
Bad main pump
Or loseing compression in cyl (I'm praying its not this)

Any one seen this before? Please let me know what you think it is. I'm hoping its not a cyl issue b/c I just bought it and I'm freaking out the thought of rebuilding the power head. the marina I bought it from said the compression was perfect and ran through the shop with no issues (consignment boat), but I'm not sure if they do a leak down compression test or the general test.

Would the comp pick up on bad cyl or loss of pressure and have error codes in system? I'm freaking out here.

If it's smooth at low and mid ranges, then very possible it's a fuel delivery issue (restriction) that only shows when the engine is using the most fuel. Usually blown cylinders run better at high speed where the good cylinders carry the "dead weight" of the bat one more easily, and run like crap at lower rpms. What did the original plugs look like? If you just tossed them, you lost a key piece of diagnostic info.

If this is a Ficht motor, has it be on the diagnostic sw yet? An bad injector can cause what you're describing, but you need to get it checked out by a knowledgeable tech.

Spark plugs were black and dirty. Yes it runs smooth and quiet, plains beautiful, purrs at 40 mph, cold starts 1st time, no smoke, no skipps, just the mid/high range studder (engine hesitation).

I indexed the plugs and gapped them. Heck I indexed them better than the ones that were in it. I'm hoping its something simple. But I like to know myself before so I can give the shop a direction possibly.

does it still have the power when warmed up? with 85 hours i would not worry about a blown cylinder, be optimistic . i have the same engine and had an fuel supply issue with clogged filters. start here- change all fuel filters. does the engine give an check engine light when warmed up?

When warm it still idols smooth and takes off smooth. I have a new fuel filter for it, but haven;t installed yet. I was told not to keep running it until the problem was found and fixed so I didn't do any damage to the engine. that's why I made an appt to get it in shop next week. I have no way of check the pumps myself and didn't want to get into pulling stuff apart and screwing something up.

Do you think it could be as simple as the fuel filter?
what other filters are there?

No engine lights come on during studder.

i found at my engine out that the ficht, especially at high loads, is sensitive to a good fuel supply- a clogged filter with limited flow may be the solution, at my engine it was.

especially when roughness starts at higher loads the engine may simply not get enough fuel . you have one fuel filter under the intake silencer with water sensor and probably another fuel filter at the boat. i replaced both and installed at the boat a heavy duty filter wit water separator. remember that the V6 150 has a serious flow rate when you push the lever to the wall, - and so it needs a good fuel supply.

the other things to check would be the ventilation of the fuel tank and the primer bulb- but like said- i would start with fuel filters and probably the problems wents out.

and sleep calm, bad compression would give problems especially with hard starts and a bad idle and that is not your issue.

Ok I put a new fuel filter on it. took it to he lake. Ran rough and even worse. This time the check engine light came on right when I got back the dock. WTW. So its headed to the shop. at least they will have a error code to go off of now. I hope its nothing major. Still idoled smooth and took off smooth. But it really ran rough from min throttle to max throttle.

Does it sound like it could be a coil ing sys problem? do these engine have coil packs or is it in the comp? If in the cmop and thats whats wrong what does that mean? A comp rebuild?

ok, my tech thinks its the main pump. pump pressure was only at 20 psi and under load it dropped to 18 psi on the dyno . So we ordered a new pump and we will install on Friday. Hopefully this fixes the surges or misses. Hopefully nothing else int eh engine got hurt b/c of this pump issue.
