HI all my first time here because I screwed up.

I have a 98 stingray with a 3.0l mercruiser with the alpha one 2nd gen outdrive.

I decided it was time to replace my water pump impeller and i took the foot off.

It was in nuetral when I did it and while i was replacing it I took the shift shaft out and I have no clue as to how it goes back in.

I have it so it goes into nuetral and revers and forward ok (no binding) but it isnt really in nuetral when it supposed to be.

I also bent the shift shaft on accident and put a little crack in the plastic separator.

The shaft was repaired by a friend of mine so it isnt bent anymore and the plastic separator isnt cracked too bad.

I have done a real number on this lower portion and im afraid it may never be right again, do any of you guys have any suggestions as to what kind of damage Ive done and how in the heck to get the shift shaft positioned correctly again?

I dont even remember which way it pointed (at the boat or at the back of the boat)

I will never touch it again once I get it back together but I need it to shift and I certainly dont want any damage done.

So if anyone could please help me out I would be forever grateful.

TIA
Chuck Kennedy

I dont know anything about your outdrive. But get a manual at least you may be able to tell where and how parts fit. There is a tab at the top of the page or try Amazon.com,Barnes and Noble
etc. or even the library. Good luck.

Which part did your remove? If it was the lower unit, it should go back in neutral, reverse, or forward, basicaly whichever gear you go with. But if you removed the whole unit, upper and lower, you should have removed it in forward gear. the foot should point straight forward when it is in drive. Because I removed one once and bent the foot just because I didn't know I was to be in forward gear! :( I had to make adjustments in my cables to center neutral on my shifter and the outdrive. It was tricky for the first time, and it will drive you nuts, but keep at it. BUT GET A MANUAL! IT WILL SAVE $$$$BUCKS$$$ by preventing boo boo's that is preventable.

I just removed the lower foot and bent the shift rod. :(

I had that bent nack to dang near perfect but my gears are screwed up, I had it in nuetral when I took it out but it has been played with a hundred times and I also took the shift rod out and spun it a lot trying to get it lined up. I guess I will have to do as you say and just adjust my shift cable and keep trying.

Oh by the way a manual will be had tomorrow:)
