I'm in the market for a new fishfinder and I want to spend $200 or less. I have two cheap fishfinders now that are basically worthless. Sometimes they show fish swimming under the boat when I can clearly see whats down there. Other times they don't show anything when I'm catching fishing under the boat. I went to Bass Pro Shops and looked at the selection they have and I have been reading and searching online and on this sight. I really want an unbiased opinion from someone who isn't trying to sell me their product.

I want a fishfinder that will read the bottom up to 20 mph. It needs to show the bottom detail. I want to be able to see fish if they are there. I generally fish in water under 40 feet deep and I like the idea if seeing a jig or lure under the boat while fishing. I do stillfish or jig as deep as 100 feet for laketrout so I would like to be able to see the fish down to that depth. Most of my time is spent on fairly clear lakes up to 600 feet deep.

So far I have looked at the bottomline 480max, humminbird 565, furuno ls4100 and fishmark 480. I like the "sonar echo enhancement"on the humminbird. I could really use some help before I actually buy one of these.

Re: I need fishfinder help

I saw the eagle fishmark 320X320 pixel , with high speed skimmer transducer and temperature, for around 140-150.00 at either basspro or cabelas.
I have had the same one for 4 plus years. I paid 300.00 for mine, plus shipping. I actually have two eagles a cuda on my dash.
I dont think you'll find a better one for the money.
I can see a 1/8 ounce jig , in 30 or more ft. of water.
They are relatively easy to operate and have all the bells and whistles you'd ever need.
Eagle has a download on there sight of the unit . It operates , and has all the options as the real deal.
You can practice setting it up and actually see how the settings effect the unit.
No, I dont work for eagle, LOL.
As far as working at 20plus mph., no problem.
They come with a base that lets you remove unit very easily. I take mine off and keep in a modified clear tackle box, when not in use.
Another thing I like is the hyper scroll, flasher type feedback.
It is almost as quick as a flasher, and if you read the flasher portion of screen. It is just like one.
They have a good warranty, for the price , its a great unit.
Of course, when the higher resolution 480X480 fishmark came out the 320's price went way down.
The detail is excellent , and with a little tweaking , it'll show you anything you need to see.
It also , stores your settings, so whenever , you turn it on its right back where you left it.
Its up to you , but for the price , IMHO, you wont find a better one.
Im gonna quit , rambling . But at least , check them out well.
KYHunter

So you can really see your jig in the water? Can you actually see a fish come up to it? Someone told me that they could see this on their fishfinder but I didn't think it was true. The older cheap versions I have are junk. What happens when you are stopped, does it show a continuous picture of the bottom or does it keep scrolling? My old ones keep scrolling and the bottom changes like when I'm moving. It's not very accurate.

I use mine a whole lot. I fish deep structure, for bass , crappie , etc.
When you stop it shows whats under you. You do need to speed up , the scroll speed alot if sitting still. I seldom , sit still for long, but it does work well . You should go to eagle site and download , the virtual unit.
Its really , a big help. I play with it now, even though I have the operation of the unit down.
The main reason , I see , that people aren't happy with there depth/fish finders is . They dont take the time to learn to set them up properly.
Yes , I can , most definately see my jig, etc. It is just getting good at reading the information you get . When I spider rig, I can see several baits , as well as structure and fish.
As far as seeing fish come to bait. I guess I have but I'm usually watching my rod tip , or where I'm going . But I will say I have seen the fish , I've caught.
The main thing is as I said setting them up correctly.
I set my sensitivity, as high as I can without getting , too wide a surface clutter signal.
This is all explained in the manual as well as the site.
Water clarity , wave action etc. will all have an effect , on your adjustments.
Really though, go to eagle site and download the 320 or if they have it the 480, virtual unit.
The 320 and the 480, are exactly the same , as far as operation . The 480 is just higher pixel count.
I also have no trouble picking fish out of cover, with some practice , you'll be as happy with one as I am.
If your thinking about getting the 480 , you cant go wrong . I just thought I'd mention the 320 as it is a good price.
If you have any more questions , you can post or e-mail me at rgkhunter@yahoo.com.
KYHunter

What you are looking for is a flasher style. These operate in "real-time" and you can indeed see a fish come up to a jig. Thats the standard for ice fishing here in Minnesota. The problem with LCD locators at speed is that it takes a bit of time for the unit to process the echos. By then you've passed over what you thought you saw. If you use the fish "arch" feature when sitting still, the arch will become broad (less arch) as the fish passes through the beam. At speed the arch is very pronounced as the beam passes over the fish quickly. You won't get a quality flasher for under $200 so the next best bet is an LCD from Eagle or Humminbird. Check right here on iBoats.

Re: I need fishfinder help

I used a lowrance flasher , dual range for many years . They do have instant feedback.
However , the eagle I use now, has a feature on the screen.Where, you look right beside the edge, that the screen scrolls from. Its very similar, to an ordinary flasher.
The feedback ,is very close to a flasher. I still have a portable lowrance, my grandad bought ,when they first came out. I have used it on boats ,as well as ice fishing.
Having used both , I still like the graph, for detail of structure , and bottom contours. If you fish deep structure, you would be much better served by a graph.
Granted you can learn to tell soft from hard bottom . As well as stumps ,from rocks, with a flasher, but the learning curve is very steep. To say the least.
Now if your mainly interested , in depth changes, general bottom detail , etc. a flasher is great.
Even with the slight delay in feedback, on the graph type depth finders. They are a great advantage, for a structure fisherman. IMHO.
Before long, you will know exactly, in relation to your boat, what section of the water column ,you are seeing.
Another thing ,I do ALOT, is motor slowly along creek ledges, drops etc. and use marker buoys.
A flasher, is just not the best for this. It shows depth changes , bottom density, fish etc. But then ,you have to try to piece it all together.
In order ,to get a decent idea, of the contours , structure, bends etc. along the bottom.
I like ,and use both type.
But, if I ever had to chose. The flasher would be up for sale.
I dont claim to be an expert, with a flasher.
But , I have freaked out my fishing buddies, by telling them .They were going to get bit, in a few secs. Then having it be true, alot of the time. This was before, I had a graph.
I set out brush piles in KY. lake, for crappie and bass, in anywhere from 3ft., to 35+ ft. of water.
When I go back to fish them , the detail from the graph ,is indespensable ?.
They both have their place, but as upinsmoke said, the ice fisherman ,really love them. Well, I agree 1000 percent.
When ice fishing, you are stationary. Where the flasher is perfect, the fish move alot less , and slower. Its more, wait for them to come to you ,then you goin to them. Generally , just knowing the depth changes . Is enough, to get into fish , ice fishing.
I grew up on a large private lake. And fished just about every day ,growing up. Spring, summer, fall, winter.
The flasher ,is by far the best, for ice fishing.
By design , its perfect when stationary.
If you look around, at the various stores , marinas, etc. You see very few flashers being offerred, unless, your up north .
The ones that you will see, are the dash type .
Which, for the purpose, is better then a graph.
When your hauling butt, down the lake, theres nothing better.
A graph will still show you the information .
Only , you'll be well past, where the reading was .
A flasher is instantaneous.
When you slow down , just like most of the top fisherman in the world.
On comes the graph, and off goes the flasher.

Not trying to be a smart A@@, or anything.

There is absolutely ,no doubt ,you would be better served. With the graph type depth finder.
I can attribute a boat load of bass, crappie, etc.
Mainly to the information, gathered from my graph.
Which, if using a flasher, would have been very vague, even, for an experienced, flasher user.

Good - Luck ,
And as I said , if you have any questions. I can help you with ,let me know.

KYHunter :) :)

I almost forgot, yes , when stationary.
The fish ,can appear more like a blob ,then an arch.
You have to be real still. It takes very little movement, if your sonar is set up properly.
For the arches to show up.
At times , the fish swim through the beam ,fast enough to give an arch.
If you intend ,to sit anchored , most of the time. Get a flasher.
If you want to know, whats going on ,under the boat . In detail , quickly, and accurately .
In order, to catch more fish. Get a graph.

Re: I need fishfinder help

I tried to download the Fishmark 480 on the Eagle website but it didn't work properly. I'm going to have to do it again. So far I like the 480 and I also like the Humminbird 565. When I get a chance I'm going to go back to Bass Pro and check them out again.

Fishmark320 is a great value, 480 even better. I have the 320...more than once I've watched a fish arch intersect with my slab & felt the strike at the same time.

The 320 & 480 both have a flasher-type return on the far right-hand edge of the screen. you can see it below - the marks to the right of the depth scale happen instantaneously.

Here's what a school of stripers looks like on the 320:

Re: I need fishfinder help

I just purchased the Fishmark 320 this weekend. Used it yesterday for the first time. I've got a ways to go in getting used to it though. Exactly how do you have yours set up to see the sinker? I was told this was possible by a guy at bass pro where I bought it. I had mine set to ID the fish with depth and would drop my lure right past the transducer and never saw it.

I have the same thing happening to me. I do not see anything even if I pass something bigger under it other than bait.

Re: I need fishfinder help

I bought an Eagle Cuda 128 and the depth stays on 60ft regardless of what I do with it. It hasn't been in water yet, other than a bathtub, but I'm wondering if it's worthless or not since I'd think the depth would at least register in 1ft of water regardless of whether it's on the boat or not. Any ideas or hints?

Re: I need fishfinder help

I had trouble with my eagle working in my swimming pool. My guess is that the water being so clear and the bottom being real light made for a bad echo return. Dont give up on it yet. Throw some dirt in a 5 gallon pail and fill it up with water and see what you get.

Re: I need fishfinder help

Hey euro,

The depthfinder is sonar. It sends out a sound pulse which reflects off something. The unit times when it sent it and when it returns.

The concrete bottom of your pool should be more than adequate to produce a reflection. Hence, being sound, and not an electronic electromagnetic wave, it can traverse through the bottom of your boat so that you can mount it inside; even if it's aluminum. BTDT

The density of clean and dirty water are about the same, so your pool's hygiene had nothing to do with it.

Must have been something else.

Mark

Re: I need fishfinder help

Hello Texasmark,

Your comments about sounding through aluminium boat bottoms prompts me to ask for more information on how you have been able to reliably do this? Are you using an alumaducer transducer, or is there some other technique you have used successfully?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

nevd
