If I log into the forum's and then move from page to page suddenly I'm logged out and have to log back in. For example, I click on dockside chat, find a post I want to respond to, write my response click reply and I'm not logged in:confused: Does anyone else have this problem? Does it have to do with "cookies"? I HATE COMPUTERS:redface: and I was born in the wrong century but at least I'm trying:D

What has your age got to do with it? I was born in 42. You may have your security set too high and not allowing cookies.

Happens to me all the time....if you write to much like me one finger express...it isn't a quick reply anymore so you get timed out....so I do it in micro-word and copy and paste...it's the only way I can do it 1955 here

Boy have I got the old fart's stirred up now:D

bhile, what do you mean "what's age got to do with it"?. At your age I'm surprised you even know how to turn a computer on!!! But good for you, you are a exception to the rule. I graduated from high school in 1976, I took no computer classes not even in college. We "old farts" are all behind the eight ball but we all love challenge's don't we. Or we wouldn't be on this forum in the first place. Maybe we can teach the "gamer's a thing or two about boating:D

What do you mean WE have a problem? YOU are the one who stuck his head in the sand and failed to learn. I was born in '53 and have built my own systems, upgraded, changed and even repaired a few. I help my younger friends who are like you and living in the dark ages.

Speak for yourself "old fart"... you don't represent everyone here. AGE doesn't have anything to do with your lack of skills.

Re: I Need Computer Help, Born In 1958

Well, I was born in 1935 and I don't think age has anythng to do with it.

I, too, hate computers but I ask my grandchildren how to do stuff and get by okay except for one thing. . . they always do what I tell them to do, sometimes instead of what I wanted them to do. :(

Re: I Need Computer Help, Born In 1958

Easy on the guy. I'm a computer consultant and its definately harder for older generations to get into computing, especially if they were/are intimidated by it. Or maybe a better way to put it is - It is easier to grow up with computers and use them than to have to teach one's self to do it.

Even a lot of young people are completely incompetent when it comes to computers. Just like anything some people have a natural ability with computers and some don't. That is un-related to age for sure. And just because someone can't grasp computers doesn't mean they aren't intelligent, it just means they have a different way of learning/thinking.

Anyways - I think the issue has been covered. Make sure you have told the forum to "remember" you, if using internet explorer make sure cookies are enabled by going to tools->internet options->privacy tab. In firefox its under tools->options->privacy.

I HATE COMPUTERS:redface:

This is an interesting statement.... I read an article once about some research that there is a sort of "karma" around computers - some people just have bad luck with them. ie: they are more likely to fail (software AND/OR hardware) for certain people - even if performing the exact same tasks as another person.

Perhaps they aren't as "dumb" as we think they are. It could be that we don't fully understand the alien technology that we based our microchips off of. "Intel" and "Interstellar" are pretty close, see the connection?

Maybe they are picking up on your hate, and hating you back? Although I don't think that flowers would work here - they would be alien plants to the computer and all - try getting some new hardware or something. Maybe a usb thumb drive, web cam, or even a new hard drive.

Also, remember to stroke the keys lovingly, rather than to mash down on them. Speak nicely to it, and don't pull the mouse's tail.

It's the blinking VCR clock syndrome, just piled higher and deeper.

I was born in 1958. Since I am an engineer and work with computers all day long I have a wealth of information I can get from all of my colleagues as well as IT people that are just a phone call away. Of course, I am also my family's IT guy now.

I was born in 68 and oddly enough this is the only forum I belong to that loggs me out time and time again . I belong to several other V bulletin based web groups and have never been logged out on any of them . The most common times I find myself logged out is if I have more than one tab open at a time I will pop back over here and poof I am logged out even though I hit the remember me button aaaaaaand have my cookies on . I almost wonder if there isnt a timer set up in the sites programing that says Ok you havent clicked on anything in 10 minutes so we are logging you out for you.

That is entirely possible. Though that kind of security is usually more suited for banking websites :)

Try adding iboats.com as a trusted and uncheck the requirement for https. If that doesn't work you can start creating custom levels for your trusted sites turning on more things such as activex, file downloads (not really relevant to this issue), etc.

On the other hand, we have a 23 year old at work who claims to "know computers". Well, he can play games, but screws up the spreadsheet EVERY time. Keeps deleting the formulas!

He don't know squat.

:redface:Ok BWR1953 I stand corrected. NO I don't represent everyone here, never said I did. YOU DID. A little tense earn't we?
I HAVE NOT STUCK MY HEAD IN THE SAND AND FAILED TO LEARN. I DO NOT LIVE IN THE DARK AGES.
I use computers all day at work. I am self taught, I put a lot of effort into it. My "light hearted" point was that for those of us born before the computer age, it is somewhat harder to grasp. I have 20 yr. old employee's who grew up in the video game, cell phone, texting age, yada, yada, yada, that just wizz through this stuff. For those of us that grew up before this time we have to work at it a little. Age DOES have to do with a lack of skill's, but only if you let it. I HAVE NOT. I AM QUITE COMPUTER LITERATE FOR SOMEONE MY AGE.
You on the other hand are a few step's ahead of most of us. I HOPE YOU FEEL SUPERIOR TO THE REST OF US.

Re: I Need Computer Help, Born In 1958

If you really want to feel like an idiot, try running Linux sometime. My old office puter decided to "eat" Windows about ten days ago and the recovery partion was toast too, so the recovery steps didn't work.

You can't buy Windows XP anymore and Vista is crap, so I loaded Ubuntu on the D: drive and got it running. Fortunately, Ubuntu comes with GIMP (a photo editor) and the "openoffice.org" office suite intstalled. With those things, I was able to keep it all going.

The only problem, is that Linux operating systems (Ubuntu, Puppy Linux, etc.) are a huge pain to configure for networking, internet access, and so forth. You also can not run Windows based software, without installing a bunch of patches. I finally got tired of fighting with it today and bought an EMachines for $268. What the heck - its barely more than buying a copy of Windows 7, when it comes out in two weeks. Plus, it has XP on it, which I'd rather have anyway!

Damn computer gremlins!
