I am just switching over to CenturyLink fiber optic DSL. I do not want to rent their modem. I went to BestBuy and bought an ADSL modem without knowing the difference and the BestBuy people did not bother to tell me there was a difference between a copper wire DSL modem and fiber optic DSL modem.

I want to get a simple modem. I do not need, nor do I want a combination modem/router/wireless router as I have the 8 port router that suits my wired network.

Any suggestions as what to look for?

My suggestion is to call them to get a recommendation for a brand and model of modem to get. They should tell you this. If one person doesn't want to tell you, call again until you get someone that will. Not all modems always play well with certain services.

Another thing you learned...sales people at Best Buy know less than you do! :)

This is far and away the best thing to do. I have seen a number of occasions in some set-ups where the lower model in a series of modems works and the more "advanced" one doesn't.......so even models within the same brand can make a difference.
