I have a 1986 Sportcraft. It has a 170 h.p. 4 cyl. 2bbl. Sterndrive. I'm told that my bilge pump is not working and it is located underneath the engine. I'm assuming it is manual as there is a switch for it on my dashboard and it is 12v. This is all I know other than it will cost m at least $700 to replace it because supposedly they would have to lift the engine up to get to it. I do have the SELOC MERCRUISER Stern Drives 1964 -91 Manual but I have yet to find out any info. about the Bilge Pump. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE. MK

depending on if they installed the quick turn base on your bilge pump, you may be able to simply give it a quick turn counter clockwise, and pull out yourself.

paying $700 for someone else to install a $50 bilge pump is kind of crazy.

your seloc manual will not have any information on your bilge pump. its a glorified knee pad. even the factory manuals only cover the engine and drive. things like bilge pumps, etc. may be in the boat manual (depending on manufacturer), however most likely are not.

That seems like way too much money to replace a bilge pump...LOL I'm assuming that when you turn the pump on, you don't hear it running and if not, have you checked the fuse? Since its an inline four cylinder, are you sure you cant see or get to the bilge pump without moving the engine? I just installed one in my boat.....3.0L and I did remove the upper and lower engine covers for access, eight screws if I remember correctly.

Hey Scott,
THANK YOU so much for your prompt reply. Question: If I'm in the boat facing the engine what side would it be on where about would this pump be located? I do not have a manual for this boat as I purchased it used in 2009. Thank you again MK

most pumps in boats with the 3.0 are in the center of the bilge, under the oil pan in the aft of the boat. follow the discharge hose.

OK I'll check it out. Yes $700 is a lot of money to install a $50 part. They did warn me that this estimate is MOSTLY Labor and that's IF they can get to it without moving the engine. IF they have to move the engine it will be an additional $150 to $200

Holy hockey puck......... almost a grand to swap out a bilge pump, I'm gonna say they gave you the we don't want to work on your older boat price!!!
That's just nuts......I have a 17.5' with a 305 in it boat was never intended to have a V8 in it and I can get to my bilge pump, it's tight I cuss a little but it is doable.

In mine the pump is also under the 3.0 and it's very tight but you can twist it and lift it just barely out. If it really refuses cooperation it may take you an hour to convince it....
If you don't want to go that way just install a Whale SuperSub 1100 aside of it and just leave the old one in (disconnected). Fits well, has a lot more capacity and pumps down to a much lower level as it even sits lower than the stock pumps usually are..

$700 is insane. That's about 7h of labor for that job. That shop wants to get rich from one job..... For that money they can take the engine out and still have a long paid coffee break.

They are probably quoting something site unseen, you should be able to easily see your bilge pump if you get your head down there and look. As the previous posters have said if you can't get the old one out then install a new one beside it, they are not very big. I would trouble shoot and see what is wrong with the old one
as said it may be a simple fuse or a loose wire.

I know a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water to throw money into, but who ever quoted a $1,000 for a bilge pump replacement, must have hooked a vacuum to the bottom of the hole! That's insane!!:brick:
