Another poster had a thread about his boat riding up on his winch post. He mentioned he read that the winch strap should be somewhat level with the bow eye.
I looked through some trailer manufacturer sites on winch placement and saw that the poster was correct. Site also said bow eye should be snug under the bow roller in case of an accident. When I took my new boat home 5 seasons ago the dealer had the winch and roller below the bow eye. I read in the forums that the eye belongs under the roller. So I adjusted for that after shortly after I took delivery. But this other persons post made me re-visit my set up that I've been trailering with for 5 years now and sure enough . . .
The Winch strap was not even close to level because it was coming down from over the top of the winch and the bow eye was 6-8 inches below the roller (not good).
Before:
I adjusted the winch on the post down two holes and reversed the winch assembly on the bracket since if I had the winch strap coming out from the lower part of the winch wheel there would not be a click lock anymore in the direction it was previously mounted.
After:
This looks a lot better now (and safer). Amazing how a certified dealer could have had so many things on my rig out of whack (no wonder he's no longer in business). I also had to raise my outboard 2 holes 5 years ago to cut down on the drag and spray. These new boat dealers seem to only care about getting you out the door and onto the next sale.
I'll see how it rides on the trailer on my 1.5 hour trailer trip to Northern Lake George this weekend. If I see a truck scale open, I'd llike to get and accurate weight on the whole rig so I can better adjust the tongue weight. My electronic bathroom scale is tough to get an accurate read with.
The only thing I see now after adjusting everything the bow eye is snug but not actually touching the roller so the roller won't wear. But the space between the web strap and winch post frame where it passes over the edge to the bow eye is less than 1/2 an inch. I use an extra tie down from the bow eye to the frame. If I see any movement or the strap looks close to chafing I'll have to get a 1/2 inch piece of galvanized metal stock to raise the winch assembly up another 1/2 inch to give that winch strap more clearance.
Like I said, hang out on these forums and ya just keep learning lottsa good boating stuff
Comments welcome if anyone sees something wrong with the newly adjusted winch set up?
