I learn something new all the time on iboats: winch, strap and roller . . .

Another poster had a thread about his boat riding up on his winch post. He mentioned he read that the winch strap should be somewhat level with the bow eye.

I looked through some trailer manufacturer sites on winch placement and saw that the poster was correct. Site also said bow eye should be snug under the bow roller in case of an accident. When I took my new boat home 5 seasons ago the dealer had the winch and roller below the bow eye. I read in the forums that the eye belongs under the roller. So I adjusted for that after shortly after I took delivery. But this other persons post made me re-visit my set up that I've been trailering with for 5 years now and sure enough . . .

The Winch strap was not even close to level because it was coming down from over the top of the winch and the bow eye was 6-8 inches below the roller (not good).

I adjusted the winch on the post down two holes and reversed the winch assembly on the bracket since if I had the winch strap coming out from the lower part of the winch wheel there would not be a click lock anymore in the direction it was previously mounted.

This looks a lot better now (and safer). Amazing how a certified dealer could have had so many things on my rig out of whack (no wonder he's no longer in business). I also had to raise my outboard 2 holes 5 years ago to cut down on the drag and spray. These new boat dealers seem to only care about getting you out the door and onto the next sale.

I'll see how it rides on the trailer on my 1.5 hour trailer trip to Northern Lake George this weekend. If I see a truck scale open, I'd llike to get and accurate weight on the whole rig so I can better adjust the tongue weight. My electronic bathroom scale is tough to get an accurate read with.

The only thing I see now after adjusting everything the bow eye is snug but not actually touching the roller so the roller won't wear. But the space between the web strap and winch post frame where it passes over the edge to the bow eye is less than 1/2 an inch. I use an extra tie down from the bow eye to the frame. If I see any movement or the strap looks close to chafing I'll have to get a 1/2 inch piece of galvanized metal stock to raise the winch assembly up another 1/2 inch to give that winch strap more clearance.

Like I said, hang out on these forums and ya just keep learning lottsa good boating stuff :D

Comments welcome if anyone sees something wrong with the newly adjusted winch set up?

Would it be possible for you to lower the winch even further and keep the strap on the top of the spool? Looks like the strap is going to rub on the bracket when you are actually pulling the boat onto the trailer.

Interesting point. I'm bringing my 9/16th socket and a box wrench with me in case I have to make adjustments along the route on Sat.
It looks OK right now but you make a good point when pulling the boat up the trailer everythings going to be at a different angle. I don't even know if the winch was designed to be mounted in the opposite direction from where it was. It does have this horizontal support post that holds the sides of the winch together now facing the boat where it was in the other direction before. I might move the strap over that post but then the strap would be riding against that post when cranking the boat up.

Like you suggest, I might have to reverse the winch crank assembly back to where it was and have the strap coming down from the top of the roller again. But then I'm defeating the trailer manaufacturer's recommendation of getting the strap level with the bow eye.

Ya, you're right. I just checked the documentation that came with the trailer and each picture of the winch shows it mounted with the strap over the top of the winch. I'll go out and flip the winch assembly around again and run strap over the top.
It's only two bolts to move it again.

Update: Ok, did it. Thanks again oldjeep, Looks good. Not that much off of being level with bow eye now. Got that bow eye up around 8 inches by lowering the winch assembly.

* did you ever notice when you go boating many times it's partly cloudy . . . But damn, seems everytime I go to adjust or install something on my rig in driveway or garage it's like 90 degrees, sunny as hell and so humid I come in dripping wet in 10 minutes :(
